I just finished reading, for the umpteenth time, the compendium of Lucian Carey's J.M.Pyne stories and it got me to wondering what ever happened to Harry Pope's machinery and tools after he turned out the lights in the shop for the last time. Does anybody here know?
While we're on the subject, does anyone here own a Pope-barreled rifle that they would care to share a photograph of?

I think Lucian Cary got some of it along with patterns for his bullet mold handles and some other things. The rest was probably scrapped - his boys burned most of his papers because they thought they were worthless. Best, Roger

I believe most of Pope's machinery was sold off after his death. I also think Gerald Kelvar got a some, but not all of it. A lot of what was cleaned out of Pope's shop and home was just tossed by his relatives, or destroyed, assumed to be useless junk. I think I read somewhere that Kelvar wrote that his family was having a bonfire in the yard when he drove up to ask about Pope's records.

Pope's rifling machine and much of his tooling is intact. I do not have all of the details as to how it got to where it is but will contact the owner and find out if he wants to be known. A lot of people know he what he has so it is not a secret but for the time being I will not give out his name. Some barrels were made with the original equipment but the owner has made a new rifling machine and will in the future make barrels with Pope rifling. When Tom Rowe gets Warren Greatbach's Pope book finished there will be lots of pictures. Cheers, Laurie

When I saw the post title, I immediately thought that Pope's machinery is redundant, as they are celibate. ;-) K.

Interesting. I recently had an email conversation with a Wisconsin blacksmith who wrote: "My Father-in-Law was a gun smith (he and another bought Harry Pope's rifling equip years ago)."

Ray Smith purchased Pope's machenery from his sons and moved it to PA. After Ray died in 1960(?) it was sold to a barber in Milwaukee who had it for 20 years. In 1980 the current owner got it all. He is working with Tom and Warren on putting the history together for the Pope books. He will send me a bit more of the histoy in the near future. He also has GeorgeSchalk's rifiling machine. Cheers, Laurie

I was aware of A book, but has this now mushroomed into books?
I can't wait - shaking just to think about it! Ron
