I just obtained a J P Sauer sidelock with hour-hand style cocking indicators. The gun is of relatively high grade as the scroll engraving is 70-80% on the receiver and side plates. A name on the left side plate in an engraved banner reads Ed Kettner and on the right plate, Coln. I read about Kettner engraving out of Cologne on another site.

The gun was purchased as a project. It locks up very tight. It is missing the right cocking indicator and 3 screws. The real issue is that it is also missing the entire forend assembly. I would like to obtain an original period parts of any grade or a new part from J P Sauer. This gun is the identical model as the currently produced "Meisterwerkflinte" shotgun.

Does anyone know where to find parts for this model? Also, how does one contact the company for information on this particular gun? I have heard that J P Sauer has much of the historical info on their products.

Thank you for any help.

I will post pictures of my actual gun. Below is a link to the Meisterwerk gun:

Ed. Kettner of Coln, Bastman of Sweden, J.D. Moritz of Leipzig were all firearms merchants. I'm curious about the serial number and how you know it was made in 1910, but it sounds like a variation of the "Knock About" Model either as a transition lock or sidelock model, depending on the number of pins and their location. Parts are more than likely going to have to be fab-ed.

Kind Regards,

Original Eduard Kettner traded out of Cologne but at present time there are numerous branches in Germany and some in Austria, Hungary, France,......Many of these have gunsmithing service on their premises. They sell shotguns of mostly Italian and Spanish manufacture plus have mail order service similar to Frankonia. I doubt you can obtain original assembly for your gun.

Wildcatter,

I have an 1887 patented J.P.Sauer double hammergun that is most probably a GI Bringback, having been taken from the Sauer Armory at the end of the War by elements of the US Army Corps of Engineers. I've been in contact with Sauer in Eckernforde, Germany about this piece, and I have their contact point's email address if you want it. Would rather not post it on the message board, however. If you will somehow get me your email address via the private message function (which hasn't worked for me in the past) I'll copy you with what I have and promply erase your address for security purposes.

Wildcatter,

I have emailed you the contact address and individual's name with J.P.Sauer & Sohn in Eckernford, Germany. If you don't get my email, let me know and I'll try again.

Sad to say, but the Sauer records are far from being complete, I think. From the contact point that I have given you, I learned that all records were burned before the Russians took over after the War. This included all records of production, description etc all the way back to Day One with Sauer. I was told that when the Company relocated to Eckernford an attempt was made to reconstruct from memory what was known at that time.

Good luck on your quest....sure would like to see photos of your Double!

The date code on the barrel flats indicates a manufacture date of January 1910. The serial number is in the 50xxx range.

Quite an interesting gun and if the barrels are sound well worth the trouble to restore though forend iron may be a tough one.

What is that piece that crosses the top rib and barrels about 10 inches up from the breech?

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

My J P Sauer & Son/VL&D Knockabout (also missing forend) has a doll's head rather than cross bolt, A simple rib on tumbler axle for cocking indicator & is no where near so profusely engraved. Cheek piece is leather over some substance which appears to probably be cork. SN is in the 87,xxx range, don't recall exactly without looking, & from the chart published in DGJ would date to about 1901. This is a back action sidelock with plates resembling a bar action.
30" Krupp bbls with a wt of about 7½lbs & 2 3/4" chambers, marked 70 on extractor face. No smokeless proofs, which indicate pre 1912 for sure.
