I have a pad on my favorite SxS that is still in good condition but it's really slick, it's not like the factory pad on my SKB O/U. Is this just nature of the beast with an older pad or is their a quick fix?

You could replace it or try some 320 frit paper on the surface done lightly to give it some new "tooth". Of course this will take any patina off of the surface.

I would also second the use of a sandpaper, but would recommend something more like 80 grit. Also, one of the pad makers used to sell a solution to put on the pads to make it sticky. Kickeez was the pad makers name

If you are not too concerned with maintaining the patina on the face of the pad, you could try wiping it (just the face) lightly with lacquer thinner. Cleans the crud and surface film off the pad, and it softens the rubber slightly. This also works on the feed rollers of your ink jet printers, in that it removes the glaze formed from feeding thousands of pages and helps the rollers work reliably again until they develop a new glaze.

I second the suggestion of a coarser grit. Kickeez pads are noted for being sticky. The coating they sell is called "Slickeez", to make them less sticky. Along with the grit treatment, some lacquer thinner will help cut the glaze off the pad. Probably best to remove it from the stock while applying.

Perhaps some cloth tape on the buttface? Can always be removed and shouldn't ruin the "patina". Might even come in "Olde English" brown...
