Are Cheddite shotshell primers the same diameter as Winchester and Remington? Any problems with them, from personal experience?
Thank you,

Cheddite primers are slightly larger than Winchesters . Never used Remingtons so I do not know about them .

They fit about the same and are considered interchangeable with CCI 109 and Winchester 209 primers. At least here in the U.K. reloading manuals. I use them and have never had a problem. Lagopus.....

I think that all primers today are "Nominally" the same size. Once upon a time Rem primers (Old 97 size) were of a smaller dia than (209) Win, Fed, etal & primers for the .410 were also of a smaller size I believe. The problem today is that the Cheddites & possibly some other imported primers are just enough oversize that after using the pockets will be enlarged so that domestic primers are no longer a snug fit. This can be a plus for several times loaded cases in which the pockets are beginning to loosen, but once used the domestic varieties will no longer be a fit.

I bought three sleeves, used two bricks and sold the rest.

Problem was puncture. About 3% of them would punch through.

My Brownings were the worst culprits, and I've been advised this problem is gun specific and I'm just unlucky. What a load of crap.

The metal is thinner, and the cap is more sensitive. Might be just the thing for old guns with less than modern hammer speed and perhaps fine for round and wide firing pins.

Not for me. I pay an extra penny and use Winchester.

We had problems with Citori 425 SC 12 gauge guns eroding the firing pins. A guy with a 28 gauge (425 I think, SX would be the only other possibility) shot lots of Challengers w/o having the problem. I think Challengers used Cheddites. Browning eventually sent a letter saying the pins had been improperly hardened, and they would replace if the worn ones were sent in. The pins only cost $5 each back then (mid - late 90's), and they are not too difficult to change.

My Beretta guns had no problems with Cheddites.

Jim,
Here are the dimensions of some of the ones I have used. the ones with a * are primers that someone else had miked up.
As you can see the cheddite primers were the most consistant in size compared to some of the others. I have used the Win. Rem, Fed, and Cheddites in 12, 16, 20, and 28 ga. and the Cheddites in 2 9/16" 16 ga. along with their hulls.

Federal 209A .239-.242 dia.

CCI 209 .240-.242

Rem. 209P .241-.242

Cheddite 209 .240-.243 stepped, most consistent in size

Win. 209 .240-243 stepped

Fiocchi 616 .243-.244 *

Rio type 209/G600 .244 *

Nobelsport type 209/686 .243-.244*

Also the ones with the * I have not used

Haven't had a problem with them in 16 ga Canadian Cheddite hulls. Certainly fired in vintage guns--LC and Fox 16. W209s seem to fit OK at reloading.

I switched from Cheddites to Fiocchi for my trap and skeet shooting after having puncture problems as well. Since then I have shot at least 15,000 Fiocchis without any problems in the same loadings I had used with Winchester and Cheddite primers.

i've used several thousand of them in about 3 dozen different guns of every action type and had no problems at all with firing pins, misfires, or anything else. plus i gave my father a couple thousand and a guy i work with uses nothing else and shoots way more than i do. it's curious to me that every time problems with cheddites come up it often seems to be brownings. i've loaded them in remington sts, gun club, federal gold medals, and rio's (just to see what i could do with them and they're not the junk everyone says). i've not seen any reason to go back to any other brand.

maybe i'm just lucky.
