I recently purchased a B grade Baltimore Arms double. After getting it and while checking it over I found two old sewing needles fastened into the forend, one under each barrel. Does anyone have any ideas?

Probably a form of "rebar". Maybe factory, maybe an old repair.

Those look as if they were intended to be easily removable in the field. Perhaps for emergency field use to make repairs to clothing, bags, shoes, etc. Just a nice place to store and carry a pair of otherwise hard to carry needles.

I suspect they were placed there as a shim to reduce the forearm to barrel rattle. A minor addition, easily removed with no change or damage to the gun.

Jim,
That might be one to pull the buttplate on, see what's hidden there.

You might find a spool of thread in the butt.

I think he had a fight with his wife, and hid her 2 favorite needles where she would never look!

I'd buy RPr's answer. I doubt they were put there for weight.

Thanks folks for your thoughts on the needles. I have checked under the buttplate but nothing there. The shotgun shows wear on the front of the frame as if it was carried alot and the barrels are brown with just a hint of the pattern showing. Checkering is still mostly there. I have feeling this gun was ordered for bird hunting in the brush as just a few scratches in the buttstock finish but the forend is nice and clean yet. The barrels are 26" but I believe were never cut as they are a close fit to each other and the chokes are still long. Right barrel is in the range of improved cylinder and the left is around modified. Works great for me shooting skeet. Gun spent a lot of time in the field maybe a trappers gun. I would lean to the thought of the needles being there as just a place to keep them for sewing repairs.
Thanks again for your thoughts.

I'll buy RPr's answer, too.
