I've been working down my checklist for the upcoming openner for pheasant a quail.
Dog in shape? Training tuneup? Working your dog helps a lot to sharpen them up, IMO. The dog and I go on a bicycle ride twice most days, with a stop in the park for training as well. She's lost about 10% weight and looks fantastic.
Are you in shape? (Round is not a shape) Don't have a heartattack out there. Exercise regularly. I still look kinda round.
The truck is getting some work, with 200+K, it has been a progressive job. Flush and all new hoses, new waterpump, new idlers on the belts. Belts were new earlier this year. Front steering all rebuilt this year. U-joints and rear brakes next weekend. Then fluids, and I should be set for the season.
My new alum truckbed drawers from Ainley for guns, ammo and other things are here and I need to bolt them down and make some fillers for the corners out of plywood.

A few things I can think of that I would definitely have to do or check is, 1) New can of fix-a-flat on board, or "Slime" in the tires, 2) Can of "Sea Foam" in the tank, and some in the crankcase, 3) Check jumper cables for rust and continuity, 4) a good chain or tow strap, and 5) some de-icer for the windshield.
I'll explain:
1) It's a little tough to change a tire, when you are parked in the mud, 2) This stuff is well known in the motorcycle world for solving deposits in carbs and cleaning injectors and lifters of sludge, 3) Just in case your battery shorts some plates and suddenly dies while you are out in the field, 4) In case you get stuck and some farmer happens along to pull you out, and 5) In case the weather turns cold and sleety before you finish your hunt.

Hey Chuck, I have a old Rover that is a candidate for such a cabinet project. Have not figured out what I want it to look like yet, but generally know how I want it to function Keep the board on your update list, a little education is is always good, maybe I will learn something . What's the weather being like over the coarse of the year? Quail ? Waterfowl ?

A good nylon tow strap or "snatch strap" as it is sometimes called is always onboard. Extra upper and lower radiator hoses, oil, toolbox, and a Hi-Lift jack or floorjack, jumper cables, enough water to fill the radiator, duct tape, safety wire, FIRST AID KIT for people and dog, list of vets along your route and destination (I had to use a vet in SD last yr and the list was handy), and of course the usual guns and clothing stuff.
On the first aid kit, I've been building this over the course of a couple yrs now. I have now included Tramadol for the dog. It is a low side effect pain killer for dogs and people. My vet and the vet in SD prescribed it for an injury on my dog. I also have a surgical stapler for closing wounds, the various wound liniments, dressings, eyewashes, surgical clamps, needlenose pliers, vet-wrap, peroxide, ... and so-on

Lay in a stock of canned kippers - the only field lunch I can bring that my dog would rather roll in than eat. Kipper breath covers my scent and confuses the grouse; they do not recognize smoked herring as a natural enemy. A flat can of tinned fish and a few nice chestnut crab apples go in the left pocket of my old strap vest, along with a packet of TP and a pocket knife. A handful of 20ga. #8s in the right pocket, and I'm good to go for the day. Hunting is best when you keep it uncomplicated!

Kennel cough innoculation for the dog if you are traveling and there are other canines coming. It's just a squirt up the nose and it's good for 30 days or so. Cheap insurance.

Dog water and people water. I carry the dog water in a plastic gas can. I like the bottled water for carrying water for me. I refill the used empties to carry water for my dogs and Joe Wood.
I carry one of those jumper battery deals in case I leave the key in the "On" posiition and run down the battery - which I did yesterday at the field trail.
Last year while hunting around Carlsbad, New Mexico I got lost and couldn't find the truck and couldn't read the GPS cause I didn't have my cheaters. So add glasses if you are hunting in a strange place and using GPS or maps and can't see up close.
Maps
I carry spare shells in .410, 28ga, 20ga, 16ga and 12 gauge, which I sell at $10 per cartridge to my friends who forget to bring their shells.
I always carry rain coats, really warm coats, and several different sizes of Walmart fleece jackets, which I layer.
And a spare shell/game vest, which I rent out to my buddies that forget theirs for $20 per day.
Duct tape
Dog boots
Comfortable shoes and dry socks for the ride home (thank you Joe Wood)
Last checklist before I get in to leave for the hunt: Dogs, Guns, Shells, Boots.
Best,
Mike
I am glad to be here.

I can see now that I've not been charging enough for the rental gear. I usually have enough ammo for a war and half a dozen vests and guns to go with them. Most times I can fully outfit a gaggle of nosepickers off the shortbus. I need to paint numbers on the back of the vests to in order to give them field commands to flush birds.
