Hi,

I'm helping to settle the estate of a recently deceased friend and he had a rare antique gun in his collection. I am looking for more information on this particular firearm, including history, value and the best way to sell it.

The firearm in question appears to be a custom made Mauser action bolt rifle chambered in .270 made by Fred Surkamer of Chicago, Illinois in the 1920s/1930s. It has a finished walnut stock, double set trigger, and a hinged floorplate. Pictures below, let me know if a better angle is needed.

I've posted this here because I saw a member of this community was familiar with the Surkhamer rifles built on the 1903 Springfield platform, but have been unable to turn up much on the Mauser platform.

Thats a newton action, not mauser or springfield. The stock seems rather plain, good chance the oringal surkamer stock was replaced. its missing the rear sight and has been drill for scope mounts. The value would in my option be pretty limited because of these issues, likely around $1000. The best way to sell it would be list it on gunbroker for .99 auction with no reserve. There is are many collectors watching gunbroker and it will be bid to a fair price.

Looks like a re-barreled Newton with some reshaping of the bolt handle and the stock.

Checkering sanded off of the original stock during a refinish? Recoil pad hurts value too, IMO.

I don't know Newtons, but those look like integral scope mounts, which strike me as odd for the WWI-era. Legit? If legit, it would appear they were d/t'ed later too?

The 1916 Newtons were very advanced for their day, but did not have integral scope mounts, merely flattened surfaces on top of the reciever ring and bridge to facilitate scope mounting. They had some advanced features, such as a unique take down system, which have never been duplicated, and other features which have been copied. The original Newton stock was more trim than that on the rifle posted here.
