Well, maybe I'm a sucker but I couldn't help but see a diamond in the rough here. I stewed over it for a week or two and then pulled the trigger. Custom Remington 600 takedown in .35 Remington. It is very dated in it's styling, a-la Weatherby, but I think it is going to clean up quite well.


I am going to replace the maple with an ebony tip, and a steel grip cap, Slim the forend contour, cut down the cheekpiece angle and reshape the grip. I couldn't decide between a Neidner plate or an English red recoil pad... but the butt is narrower than the steel plates I have so English pad it is. I'll inlet Dakota swivel studs.
I am working on period correct removable scope mounts and have an excellent 2.5-8 scope for it.

I think you'll end up with a very handsome and useful little carbine!

What a wonderful project. I have a fondness for take down rifles and the caliber is just about perfect. Sounds like you have thought through what needs to be done. Would love to see pictures of the finished project..

I remember seeing that rifle sell at cowans a few months ago. I was wondering who made the takedown at the time, looks well made.

cool. I would say a .6" Old English Decelerator pad for the butt.
and it needs simple iron sights.

A special one of a kind rifle like that one deserves a leather covered pad to reinforce it's new refurbishment. I added a leather covered decelerator to my 7x54mm A-bolt and it really set it off.

I have a 20mm blood red English pad for it. I have almost sorted the scope mounting. In order to take down, the scope must be removable. I do not care for Weaver style stuff and ditched the mount that came with it. The vintage Williams Quick Convertible seemed appropriate. I will try that before I go to modern Leupold QR stuff.
The Williams 600 mount stuck over an inch forward of the joint and would not allow take down. I was able to modify a 722 short action mount. However it will only use two mounting screws so I am going to start there, but I am unsure if that’s a permanent solution.
I am going to test fire before I start cutting wood.

I like your ideas for making some cosmetic changes to this gun. But there are a couple things I'd suggest considering. The barrel looks, to my eye, to be too short and slim for the forearm, and the grip needs to be more open than your rough draft illustrates. Instead of just shortening the forearm and installing an ebony tip, I think this would be a good place to consider a Mannlicher type carbine configuration. The forearm wood is fairly plain, so it wouldn't be too difficult to find a stick of walnut with matching grain and color. Just a thought.

A Mannlicher style stock could definitely work.

When I saw the first pictures, I had the thought that a slimmed and shortened British sporting rifle style forearm might be able to change proportions in a pleasing way. If mocked up and planned, there also seems to be plenty of meat on that take down connection for a little contouring of the metal, not just stock wood.

Mine too is just a thought. If the price made it interesting, I'm pretty sure I would have stopped and looked that thing over if I bumped into it. Thanks for showing it.

I appreciate the suggestions and the feedback. I agree about forearm length and may even fit a short barrel extension purely for cosmetic purposes. I do not understand what is meant by more open grip, but I know the current grip curved too far forward and I will be shifting the grip cap rearward.
I am open to anything except a mannlicher stock of which I have never seen a pleasing one.

Would Talley QD mounts work?

I agree with craigd about re-contouring the takedown connection metal, which could result in a more pleasing forearm. At the same time, lightening cuts(hidden) could be helpful.

Talley is a nice high end option, I like the vintage of the Williams pieces and if I can make sure I am comfortable with the 2 mounting screw connection, I will try to use them.
I agree with a possible lower profile recontour and certainly have the resources and ability. I also considered some weight reduction there, though current weight and balance is not unruly.
