I am going to look at a Remington 40XB that I understand was made in 1959. I believe the serial number is 23 or 24. I am just wondering if the early serial numbers command any more money. I understand the gun was owned by an alternate Olympic shooter. Any info is appreciated. Also value. Understanding condition is everything, and I do not know that at the present time.

My info shows the 40XB's were made 1964 to present....

Interesting:

All of the Match/Varmint Grade 40-XBs, regardless whether single shot, or repeater, are marked (Stamped!) 40-X on the left side of the receiver, opposite of the ejection port. The "B" part of the designation is the last digit of the serial number, as in "XXXXXX B".

There are NO match rifles marked "40-XB".

I have an early Model 40X Centerfire. Single shot 222 Rem, built on a 722 action, made from 1961-1964. Remington on left side of receiver, not marked 40X anywhere. My info shows the Model 40X Target Rifle (22RF) was made from 1959-1964. BTW, my rifle is also dead nuts accurate.

I always thought the 40XB was designated for the rim-fire models?

Somebody here http://www.remingtonsociety.com/ would probably have the definitive answer.

I believe the 722 based rifles are 40X, the 700 based rifles are 40XB, and the benchrest ones are marked 40XBR. I'm rebuilding a 40XBR at this minute.

Most if not all of the govt surplus 22's were 40X's, but undoubtedly they were changed to 40XB after the action change.

There never were any 40X or 40XB long actions, only short actions even for the longer cartridges.
