I picked this up in a buy with an LC Smith I wanted. Can you guys help me.
Questions:
1. Looking at the muzzle, has this gun been re-lined? Looking at the breech it doesn't seem like it, but at the muzzle it could be.
2. The only markings are the serial number, the number 22 and a small mark under the for end. Could this 22 be a re-stam when the barrel was re-lined?
3. What is something like this worth? The prices on the internet are all over the board.

I am not sure what I am going to do with it, I just thought it would be fun to have.

Thanks In Advance

Jerry

I can't tell from the pics if it's a #2 or #7 action. That would make a large difference in the price. And a GOOD reline is very hard to identify, unless you have an identical condition gun right next to it that hasn't been relined.

But one way to make a good guess is if the outside of the gun is 'way more worn than the inside of the bore! Old .22s often show their age in the bore just as much or more than in the outside finish, especially those made before "Kleanbore" priming. If the bore is cherry and the rest of the gun well-used, chances are it was relined. A real Remington guy, could tell you if that "22" mark is factory. I'm not one.

Thanks Mike,
I thought the action was a No. 4?

Jerry,
More than likely it is a #4.If it has no uper tang,it is a # 4.

The 22 caliber marking is typical of the Remington rolling blocks. The muzzle crown is not, so I would suspect relining at some time. It is doubtful it was done by Remington, they would simply replace the barrel.

The #4 had an upper tang, no lower. It came in solid frame and takedown versions.

I have several No. 4's and all the barrels are marked the same as yours, i.e. the caliber with the serial number directly underneath. None of mine bear a recessed muzzle crown like yours.

JC Hannum,
I stand humbly corrected,of course you are correct about the tang.

Yeah, Mike it is a #4. Brain fart on my part. Nice little guns that used to be common. Frank de Haas' book on gunsmithing projects for single shots has some info on tinkering with these.

From the pic, it looks like the bore is centered between the flats but the unusual crown is not. If this was a liner that was recessed, it seems the bore of the liner tube must be off center. That's not very likely. Not saying it wasn't re-lined, but the crown must have been cut using some crude jig to hold an end mill in a hand drill or something. If the crown was lathe cut, you'd think it would be centered. Of course, it could have been a quickie job using a four jaw chuck with no care taken to adjust the jaws and center the bore. Maybe it was lined. Maybe it was someones crude attempt to repair damage to the original crown.

Thank Keith, you see the same thing that puzzled me. I was going to shoot it today, but forgot it at home when I went to the range.
