I just had an online appraisal done on the following rifle. It's a Westley Richards .450 #2 Model 1897 with target barrel freshly proofed.

Nice quality rifle built with a mofified Martini action. These are generally special order weapons and do not have specific model numbers. Collector following VERY limited but pristine examples will command premiums, WHEN you can find an interested buyer.

* Current Fair Market Value: $750.00

** Replacement Cost: $1,250.00

Maybe I was just hoping for a higher value.

HMMMM...lots wrong with the description and the value. An 1897 action, easily worth 5K or so.

Take it over to the ASSRA or the Nitro Express Forum sites and offer it at that price. It will get snapped up in a few minutes.

I could not put an exact dollar value on it, but that "appraisal" is way off. If they were correct, then even a bottom feeder like me would have several of them sitting round.

Believe me I wasn't going to let it go for that. I am going to sell it though when I get a feel for what it's worth.

Mike,
its really a bit hard to say. Thats not the original chambering for the rifle is it? I have never seen one in that caliber, but anything is possible. I seem to remember that gun being about 1904 or so. My cartridge book is at the shop, but I think .450#2 was a later cartridge. That will detract from the value, but my guess is that is about a 7-8K dollar gun on todays market. They are a great action, and free of several of the problems that The Gibbs pattern exhibit. Tang safety? I couldnt see in the pics.

Mike:

I'll take every one you have at the replacement cost price quoted. No limit on the quantity I'm offering to take off your hands.

Jesting aside, I wonder whether the appraiser was quoting on the correct rifle or reversed two simultaneous appraisals. That, or complete ignorance, are the only two reasons I can think of for describing that rifle as a Martini.

I tried it just to see what would happen. Cost was $9.95. I don't think I got my money's worth out of the deal. SKB I think you said it was originally a .450/400. Saftey is on the side above the trigger. I couldn't see too much resemblence to a Martini either.

I'd say start her out around 7500$. Great action, great caliber, not alot of original condition. It will make a fine shooter. The side safety isnt my favorite, but most of the earlier guns had them. Sure would be a fun gun to take a nice bear with before you sell it.
