Does anyone out there have some examples of peep sights on DRs?

I'd like to see how it has been done in the past.

And does anyone out there add new peep sites to old DRs? Can you add using claw-style scope mounts?

Thanks

This is nice. Have the original top lever screw replaced with one made like this. You can then put it back to original anytime.

Is this peep sight available, or was it a custom made piece? Can you supply contact information for whichever is applicable?

It was custom-made for the this drilling (my photo).

The gunsmith is a friend and will not make them for customers; the time involved to make and "regulate" each one to the rifle scares most people off. Also, there is quite a bit of empirical "fiddling" to get it right and he prefers things he can measure.

I can tell you the windage screws in the folding blade are 2/56, Allen-head, and the holes are hand-drilled with a small collet-held drill to prevent run-out. The post holding the blade is hand-filed after the it's threaded to match the original top-screw and a center line is determined (by a taught string from the front sight over the original rear blade then back over the post). After assembly, elevation is regulated by filing down a new front sight blade. Don't forget to put the original screw under the buttplate for the next guy.......

PM for more info.

Best,

C.

Very nice sight!
Another very interesting ghost sight is owned by 93mouse on NE forums.

With kind regards,

I would sure recommend a ghost sight if the DR will be used for anything nasty. I had a flip-up sight on a Kersten locked 9.3x74SXS rifle by Foerster that fit into the tang, but it wasn't what you would call a ghost ring. Steve

Here's a peep on a double rifle.

German and Austrian makers sometimes provided flip up diopters on rifles and drillings to be used in conjunction with the conventional front and rear sight. For precision shooting, they are excellent albeit slow. Quite a few M-S rifles were so equipped.

OWD,

Check out this thread of May 2009. Found this simple peep by JJ Perodeau at Champlins works well enough...

OWD,

Have a look at the neat little aperture sight on my Westley Richards .303 double:

Of course, it is original to the rifle and not an add-on, but it gives you an idea of how they did it in 1901.
