Anyone try the new Federal Safari ammo? Two loads are "Lead Free" with Barnes bullets. Are these okay to shoot in a SXS Chapuis double rifle? I live in CA and would like to find factory loads that I can use in the lead-free zones out here!

If so, would you prefer the Barnes® Triple-Shock® X Bullet® OR the Barnes® Banded Solid™ option? Mostly used on wild boar, but want something all around use including elk and moose and bear. Thanks!

Because of OSR. (Over Stressed Rifleing).

There is credible reports of the barrels showing the rifleing on the OUTSIDE of these thin barrels after fifing monometal bullets thru them. I won't chance my valuable rifles when there are so many other premimum bullets available.
If you're in a lead free zone of California where mono's are the law.... The vote your elected representives out and change the stupid law.

Side note; Hoser the origionator of this thread either sold or was selling his Chapuis because of this law and mono's.

No, most will prefer .375 rim-less nitro express Holland or dare I say Ruger. Bolt action firearms and ammunition are much less expensive and accurate too. Those utilizing Mauser system (cf feed/EXTRACTION) will stand up to grain of sand better then any SxS. Ruger also offers very affordable compact rifle in 9,3x62 which uses same diameter bullets like 9,3x74 but is higher performance because rimless ammo for bolt guns is loaded to higher pressure. The Ruger No. 1 Single Shot Rifle is offered in the USA in 9.3x74R, but not 9.3x62. Is the offering in Europe different?

Look at Strum & Ruger website under Hawkeye African offering the 9,3x62 M77 bolt rifle is listed there. The .375 version is pretty nice handling rifle at fraction of SxS 9,3x74 rifle cost. I would put better pad on that Ruger to take some steam out of heavy recoil 9,3x62 cartridge can generate in light rifle.

Thanks. I did not know about the M77 in 9.3x62. Sounds interesting. First time I have seen a standard factory US rifle in the caliber.

The only problem I was ever aware of was the one with A-Square bronze monolithic solids about 15 or so years ago. That was a problem briefly with some English doubles but I've never heard of any others.

The Barnes triple shock is an awesome bullet. I use it in my .416 and my 45/70. 5 one shot kills on elk..dont get any better than that...making it 6 next week
