What brand or type of checkering tools would you all recommend for a novice who wants to clean up old worn and clogged up with varnish etc. checkering.

Not many choices. Steve Earl Products or Ullman Precision.

It all depends upon how many stocks you plan to rechecker. Carbide tools are fantastic, but a bit pricey for cleaning up and repointing one or two stocks.
