I just read that the Goex plant is to close permanently at the end of the year. If no one buys it the only supply of BP will be from foreign sources so good luck to all who load BP shells.

Hodgdon is getting out of the BP business and are trying to sell off the assets.

Doesn’t Uncle Sam have a surprisingly large annual requirement for black powder for use in initiators in artillery shells?

I never bought 4F until I found an almost full one pound can at a gun show a couple years ago for only $5.00. A pound of pan powder will last a very long time, even for an active flintlock shooter.

Prior to that, I just would grind my own 3F or 2F in a make-shift non-sparking mortar and pestle consisting of a ceramic ashtray and a plastic screwdriver handle. I just grind a small amount at a time, in case it should go off for some reason. I never had a problem.

When I competed with roundball rifles in NMLRA competition I would sift my black powder that I would use before a match, for my cross-sticks rifle and my lightweight benchrest rifle. That got rid of the fines and the extra large, coarse particles. I saved them, of course. You would be amazed at the amount of fines I would get out of FFg. I had three sieves that I used to do this procedure, the sifting. I would only do a small amount at the time, then can it and seal it up. This was to lower the chances of an unexpected ignition while I was sifting and sorting. The difference between group sizes with my rifles was pretty impressive when I used sifted powder, as opposed to straight out of the can.

I'll look and see. I may have a can of FFFFg. If I do I have absolutely no use for it, and I'll let you know, Keith (67galaxie).

I just looked and I do have a pound can of FFFFg Goex, Keith. If you can conceive of a way to get it to you without breaking the bank it's yours. I've never owned a flintlock gun, only percussion, and don't even remember how I came by it. Likely a prize in a shooting match, or something like that.

stan, flintlocks are fun...and it is very satisfying to tune one to shoot when you want it too...

Didn't say I never shot them. Said I never owned one.

I am sure that black powder will always be available in one way or another because the use by industry and the military is not going to be reduced in the foreseeable future unless they go over to pyrodex. Though the strangest use for gunpowder was in large industrial and power generating station Fuses to speed up the increased size of fuse failure indicator, black powder is still heavily used in the mining of fancy stone Marble etc because it has a tendency not to shatter the stone too much. As we Brits are so fond of gun salutes for the Mo narcs birthdays and things the smell of Sulphur and the smoke from those WW 1 Field Guns will be sadly missed.
