Can not seem to find a source for gold ovals anywhere. Any ideas?

I think our member SKB described buying a less than collector quality gold coin and fashioning an oval.

Dyson has them (peterdyson.co.uk). I’ve also seen them offered in muzzle loader catalogs.

I used to buy all my gold, silver ect wire, flat plate stock from T.B. Hagstoz in Phila,Pa.
They had punched out circles,ovals and even letters of different sizes also.

You select the karat gold and the thickness you want, and tell them the size you are looking for.
They will tell you what punch-press size(s) they have to accomodate.

Pay by C/C over the phone.

I used them for 50 yrs w/no problems.

I see they have a new website, but it seems to be in progress.
I always just called the 800# and told them what I needed.

$347.00 at Dyson's. Silver, $35.00. The low value coin may be the best solution. Peter is usually at the Baltimore show. A face to face may net you a discount. The applications for the tables at the Baltimore show went out this week, so the show may actually be held this year.

At nearly $1800.00 per ounce, there are no low value gold coins these days. Most gold coins are in the 90% or higher purity range, and 14k is probably plenty for a stock oval. I think I'd be checking out Kutter's source.

This may or may not be of help, I have only fitted two Gold ovals in stocks one was a standard oval the other was a shield shape. Now I have long given up purchasing Gold and Silver from the usual retail sources because too many people are taking a goodly slice of profit from my purchase. On this side of the pond Victorian Silver coins where still in circulation up to the sixties and some longer with the Sovereign and half sovereign still in common use until the early 1900 s. Because of this there are a number of worn coins about, not suitable for collectors. Victorian Silver Shillings (ideal for ovals in fact I fitted one on the posting "heavier gun required" with pictures) are around £3 to £5 depending on condition even less if in a bad state, Sovereign's in worn condition sell for the gold price on the day plus a little profit for the dealer.

Most everyone that sells precious metal in sheet and wire form will post the thicknesses in Brown & Sharpe gauge.

22gauge in B&S is .025"

Larger the B&S gauge,,the smaller dia in .000"

I bought all of my wire and sheet in thickness/diameter in 20, 24, 26, 28 & 30 ga
That filled the necessary wire dia thicknesses for the work. Sheet stock the same.

For a stock oval,,most are 14k or 18k on older guns. It takes wear well and still looks good.
24k (pure 100% gold) is nice but engraving can be worn easily because of the soft nature of the metal.

To figure the % of pure gold in an alloy of gold,,simply make a fraction of the Alloy/24.
14k gold is 14/24 ths gold. The remainder is the alloy metal. Can be copper, silver,, lots of different metals to give it different shades of yellow and even red and green hints in the 14k and 18k range.
10k gold is 10/24 ths gold,,the remainder alloy metal.


I supplied the 10k stock ovals w/the pin soldered to the back of them for a time in the early 2000's. They were retailed by Galazans and I think Brownells carried them too.
The basic punched out oval I sourced from Hagstoz back then.
I beveled the outer edge to make inletting easier, bent the flat oval into it's curved shape in the simple die I made.
Then soft soldered the brass pin to the back of each.

Circumstances changed and I didn't supply them anymore. Don't know who does now or if they are still being sold.
A quick check of Galazans website only shows a brass and a nickle silver oval.

I haven't bought any 'supplies' in quite a while. Working on my current stock hoping to dwindle it down at about the same rate as I am.

why not buy the Galazans breass and have it gold plated?
