Greetings, new to this forum. Own several nice sxs, and recently acquired an Ithaca NID 28 gauge which we(wife and I) will keep and shoot. Would like info on how to get started researching this gun’s history. So far found year of manufacture, we think,1936. Thanks in advanced for any help.

Welcome, JW. This is a great place to learn. I've been hanging out here for longer than I care to remember, and still learn nearly every day.

Sounds like a nice "new" gun, the Ithaca. My suggestion is to buy a copy of Walter Snyder's book on Ithacas. It is the definitive work on the guns, is very readable and has lots of excellent photographs. Walt is a regular here, and will likely drop by with some info on your gun. If you could take some cell phone pics of the action and barrel flat's markings, we could help you post them here. You may be able to learn a good bit about it by doing so.

Best, Stan

Welcome JW. Walt Snyder’s book, The Ithaca Gun Co. From the Beginning is not cheap since it’s out of print but it is worth it. And if you don’t care about having a 1st edition, get a 2nd. It has a great deal of additional information.
Posted By: Nudge Re: NID 28 - 04/24/21 12:38 PM
Yes, get the 2nd edition, as it has everything the 1st has plus more. They arent two separate editions...the 2nd is just the 1st plus an addendum that adds another 50% to the book.

Walt is a member here, and he jumps in from time to time. His handle is his name.

A well made, classic American shotgun in 28GA no less. Not many of those were made. Congratulations on that! Pics?

Walter has sent the Ithaca records he had to the McCracken Research Library at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming. Cody is now providing research letters on Ithaca guns.

a google search for "ithaca nid 28 gauge", will reveal much interesting info...

When Ithaca Gun Co. introduced the NID in 1926, they added the .410-bore to the offerings and dropped the 28-gauge from the offerings. However, they did continue to make some 28-gauge guns. In those days our North American ammunition companies offered two 28-gauge loads -- a 2 1/2 inch shell with 1 3/4 drams of bulk smokeless powder or 14 grains of dense smokeless powder pushing 5/8 ounce of shot;

or a 2 7/8 inch shell loaded with 2 drams of bulk smokeless powder or 16 grains of dense smokeless powder pushing 5/8 ounce of shot.

Western Cartridge Co. finally got around to applying progressive burning powder to the 28-gauge by late 1931, bringing out their Super-X load in a 2 7/8 inch shell pushing 3/4 ounce of shot at higher velocity.

Ithaca Gun Co. ran these ads in April 1932 --

and with the first 1932 Ithaca Gun Co. catalog 28-gauge NIDs were back in the offerings.

Thanks! The Buffalo Bill Center will do a “factory letter” for $75. What’s in a factory letter, I mean what info usually?

Can’t seem to figure out how to get pics on, also, is it bad to show serial number?
Posted By: ed good Re: NID 28 - 04/24/21 09:47 PM
regarding revealing serial numbers...

rumor has it, the feds have lists of stolen guns, including some serial numbers...

paranoia suggests that "they" are monitoring internet postings, looking for links to stolen guns...

who knows, cept "them"...

to avoid possible hassle, safe bet is to not reveal the last few digits of a gun, for which you do not have a lengthy history of its ownership...

I collected small bore Ithaca’s for many years , especially the 28’s and probably can help you if you want to pm me! I did write an article on them in the Winter 2000 issue of the Double Gun Journal. Seems so long ago and I learned more about them following that publication. If you want to ask questions on this forum, I’ll help as much as I can. They only made just over 400 of these guns in 28ga., making them quite scarce. I’ve had lots of conversations with Walt S over the years and he is a fine gentleman. We shared some gunshow tables on a few occasions and those were memorable weekends.

To post photos on this antiquated site one needs to use a photo hosting service, I use Imgur.com. Between foreign and domestic terrorist groups, gang violence, border issues, racial violence and Covid-19 if you think the Feds have the resources to watch for serial numbers of 90 + year old shotguns you really are paranoid.

I agree with Researcher. I don't think they are "looking" for us.

Better be careful guys, statements like that don't pass the purity test...
Posted By: ed good Re: NID 28 - 04/26/21 01:58 PM
only "day" no...an "day" aint sayin...

if "day" is lookin, den "day" most likely got software dat is scannin internet guns for sale files lookin fur strings of alpha/numeric characters associated wid key words, like caliber an gauge, etc...

when there is a hit, the software then runs a comparison by a file of serial numbers of known stolen guns...when there is a match, an exception report is generated for human follow up...

or not...jes sayin...

The only thing you have to be paranoid about is the anti-gun Democrats. They have a long and proven history of working relentlessly to take away the 2nd Amendment Rights of law abiding U.S. citizens.

In fact, House Democrats recently passed two anti-gun Bills. But some seriously dumb gun owners keep voting for them...

No Ed. they are just commin for a little each time so you don't notice. Today it's this bad gun, tomorrow it's that bad gun. Soon you will hear that that rifle is to accurate. Why would anyone but a nut need a rifle that accurate? Mark my words! One bill is already proposing a 2000FPS velocity limit!

This comment is sheer foolishness ed. I never said such a thing.

As tanky notes, the anti-gun Democrats keep attempting to take our 2nd Amendment Rights a little at a time. The big push right now is to take semi-automatic rifles and to implement Universal Background Checks. One of the bills Democrats just passed would make it a felony for you to loan your cousin a gun for hunting or target shooting without paying for a transfer and background check. Of course, another check would be required for them to return the gun to you. It would be illegal to loan or give a friend or relative a gun for personal defense unless they were in immediate danger. A mere violent threat against them would not be enough, and would violate their law. Large capacity magazines are also a recent target.

If they are successful, they will come after handguns once again, as they have in the past. And they have also attempted legislation to ban rifles and ammunition that is capable of penetrating Police body armor. Of course, such a ban would target rocky mtn bill's bolt action elk rifles.

The U.S. Supreme Court just agreed to hear an appeal concerning Concealed Carry laws. The outcome will be very interesting, but there is little doubt what the outcome would be with a couple more Liberal anti-gunners appointed by anti-gun Democrats.

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us...ase-carrying-handguns-public-2021-04-26/

Anti-gun Democrats are playing the long game. They started with the NFA of 1934. The next big push was the Gun Control Act of 1968. Now it is a more or less constant stream of one anti-gun measure after another, always picking away at our gun rights. They know that they must engage in incrementalism at this point. But enough of them have stated their objective to eliminate the 2nd Amendment that only complete fools would think that sporting shotguns would be exempt from future restrictions and bans.

Virtually all of these anti-gun measures come from Democrats. Virtually all of them target law abiding citizens. Amazingly, some gun owners keep supporting the anti-gun Democrats who are attacking our Constitutional Right. That is even dumber than you misrepresenting what I say about it.

so, are the supremes gonna protect our rights? re the ny law that restricts the right of the people of ny state to bear arms?

or are they gonna rule that states have the power to infringe on peoples rights, as the 2nd amendment only forbids federal infringement and does not apply to state infringements?

and another thing...right now, if i drive from nh to va, with a handgun, i am violating the laws of five states: ma, ct, ny, nj and md...seems like those states should honor the laws of my home state, nh...but they dont...

Ed, nobody knows how the Court will rule on this case. But this case is being heard to decide if we have the Constitutional right to defend ourselves with firearms outside our homes. If you read the 2nd Amendment, and you read the words of the Framers, nowhere does it say you can only defend yourself in your home.

What we do know from past history is that the Justices who were seated on the Supreme Court by Liberal Democrats all provided sworn statements during their confirmation hearings saying that they respect the 2nd Amendment Rights of U.S. citizens. But when push comes to shove, most all of the Liberal Justices side with the anti-gunners, and go against law abiding citizens and gun owners. This is where we will see Trump's legacy in the votes of the three Justices he nominated, along with three others nominated by Republican Presidents. I would bet that the three Liberals will rule against gun owners. It's what they do.

You mentioned how you would currently be violating the laws of five states if you drove from NH to Va. with a handgun. I have no doubt that is probably true. I believe you because every one of those states you mentioned is a Democrat Blue State. This Supreme Court case concerns restrictions in New York, a Democrat Blue State. The 2008 Heller decision and the 2010 McDonald decision concerned anti-gun restrictions in Washington D.C. and Illinois, two more Democrat strongholds. That should tell you something. Virtually everywhere the 2nd Amendment Rights have been infringed is controlled by Democrats, and it was Democrats who passed those anti-gun laws. And it is Democrats who are always pressing to do more to gradually take away our Constitutional Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

Is it any wonder that the same Liberal Democrats who are attempting to erode the 2nd Amendment are also trying to shut down free speech too? The Rights of a free people are just not consistent with creeping Socialism. Does it make sense that Liberal Democrats are always chipping away at the Gun Rights of law biding citizens, yet they wish to restore voting rights to convicted felons, and turn a blind eye to millions of illegal aliens ?

Finally, do you still believe the following statements you made here, or were you just trolling to ignite shit-storms?

So actually you can travel with your handgun according to the Firearms owners protection act. If you are legal in the state you started from and will be legal in your destination state you are legal to travel. Your gun must be unloaded, locked in a case and inaccessible by you, like the trunk of a car. Of course if you are pulled over in one of the Democrat controlled commie states like my home state of NJ, expect to get arrested then the court will sort it out. You will win the case but you will lose 10's of thousands fighting it. Your trip will be ruined and so will you but hey, all in the name of getting all those guns off the streets. By the way I like guns, I'm always looking on the street when I'm out trying to find some of those guns but so far no luck! As far as the Supreme court goes, some of those justices are compromised and they must vote how their handlers tell them constitution be dammed. Did they look at any evidence of election rigging and take a case? No. When well north of 50% of Republicans think there was voter fraud and 25% of Democrats you would think they would look at it to calm things down. Democrat polices under Biden are designed to destroy the USA. When Putin of all people says the west is committing suicide you have to wonder what in the hell are these people thinking. I don't see the center of the country buying into gun control, critical race theory and insane LGBT whatever. We are at 1859 today just before the civil war.
