Just refinished this old Mortimer SxS muzzleloader. Was looking for info on the markings. Hoping this is the correct section for this. I know very little about this but do know this was owned by Lawrence of Arabia so it's not rare or valuable. Well except to me as I learned a lot trying to save this old rusty crusty thing. I have seen pics of these online and most seemed to have a 14 stamped under the barrels which mine is missing. Any info about this would be greatly appreciated. Jeremy

Pics did not do what I wanted so just click on the links. I will figure this out eventually.

original famous maker guns usually have the makers name and address engraved on the top rib...

later knock offs are usually of lesser fit and finish and may have a famous makers name stamped on the locks...in a bogus effort to capitalize on someone else's fame...

h&s were barrel makers to the birmingham gun trade...

So am I correct to assume the markings are a from of proof marks? The 262 number is where the front ram rod tube holder thingy is supposed to be but is missing perhaps a serial number? Wouldn't imagine they used serial numbers on these old things. Could be wrong. I do what I'm good at.

more like a factory control number...guns were rough fit and major parts numbered...then gun was disassembled for finishing and embellishment...then finished parts were reassembled...very helpful to have major parts numbered the same...

Thanks for the link. Seems mine might be missing a stamp or two? It was in really bad shape when I got it so perhaps they are worn away? Either way always nice to learn something about these old scatter guns.

Meant it was not so it isn't really historical

I figured Lawrence of Arabia kept her in his camel stall....careful you don't blow your head off with that thing.

Are you trying to be a tool? What exactly is your issue?
