“The holy grail of model 24 collectors”. Who knew there were a serious group of 24 collectors? I never did. Why was this even made? 24’s were working guns for farmers and weekend hunters. Utilitarian grade at best. A serious Winchester shooter would have been more likely to buy a model 12 or for a side by side a 21. I guess they would make you what you wanted if you were willing to pay for it.

A bit strange that someone would go to all that trouble and use fence post wood. Check this sellers other auctions, wonder who prices his stuff?

Just because you can build it, doesn’t mean you should.

He meant the Monty Python version of The Holy Grail...

Picture #33 is a good clue that it's an aftermarket upgrade.

The engraving/matting done by the engraver was done by working around the existing proof mark.

Done at the factory, the engraving would have been done first,,then the metal finish (blue /plating, ect),,
Lastly the totally finished firearm went to the Range for Proof.

The proof mark would be stamped not only into the finish,,which this one doesn't really look like the stamping broke through the bluing.

But the real clue is that the Proof mark was done BEFORE the engraving/matting.
The engraver nicely worked around the already existing proof mark on the frame. The work was done on an already finished and proofed firearm.
The Proof mark would not have been there when handed over to the Factory Engraver(s) for their work..

The grip cap doesn't look like either the hard rubber or steel grip caps Winchester used during the production life of the Model 24.

Where are the GOLD inlays the seller talks about in the text?

Quote:
it is engraved with GOLD INLAYS, it is the highly desirable solid rib version,

"Highly desirable solid rib version"? Ever heard of a Model 24 with anything else?

Lipstick on a pig.

Could be white gold?...Geo

To me those silver inlays smack of something a GI got done in occupied Japan.

One thing's for sure ........ you can't fault him for not posting enough pictures. Ninety one ........... sheeshh.

I thought the forends on Model 24's were of the spring loaded snap on variety.
The forend iron in pic #2 is identical to the iron on a Model 37 28 gauge, different than all the other Model 37 gauges.
Complete forend disassembly required to remove forend and barrels.

Did you happen to notice the checkered stock?
I've not seen a model 24 with checkered wood either.

A mystery for sure.

This seller must still be on an acid trip. You'll see Joey Biden shooting S/C with a Perrazi before he gets his asking price. All the extras on this M24- sorta like putting a mink coat on a $5.00 street hooker-- Alles ist verruckt! Der Fuchs

Every time I see a 24, I have to shake my head and wonder why Winchester didn't do something to clean up the line on that gun. How hard would it have been?
Posted By: ROMAC Re: Winchester deluxe - 05/28/20 02:44 PM
It also has the weakest extractor ever designed. Looks like it was stamped from the metal from a 5 gallon bucket.

I wonder how this box label was generated? SN 104594

Unfortunately, Model 24 records were apparently not kept after SN 64XXX in 48' through the end of production (total 116280) in 58'.
I assume Cody would therefore have no record of the 2 "Special Deluxe"? If not, how does the seller know there is (only?) one other?
Current bid is almost $2,800.

So is the box a fake?

This caught my eye from the same seller. I have a "Calcutta" .405 95 TD...only mine is marked Lyon & Lyon and definitely not new in the carton. Probably a "One of One". grin

This fellow is apparently known for his fakes on a number of different guns.
Posted By: GMCS Re: Winchester deluxe - 05/29/20 08:51 AM
I dont think its a fake. Just a very rare very ugly gun. My Fox model B 410 is even uglier though.

Those guns have been around for years.
Every time someone bumps into them, they restart the same thread.

Yawn.

Both labels have a "counterfeited look" to me.. If it looks too good to be true, it usually is. This schmuck must be completely out of his mind to believe he can get his asking price for this POS M24- I'd rather have a Fox-Savage Model B-- the "pipe wrench" of the double shotgun world. RWTF

For what it is worth I saw a Model 24 with serial # 2 at Bedlam's , Fairbury, Nebraska many years ago. I am sure it was less $ than this gun.

from what i see... this gun looks like it might be in bedlam...in the earlier sense...
