Just for Lonny:
New York steak, tater tots and cornbread came off the charcoal grille. My piece of cornbread broke, but, was really tasty anyway. The veggies could have come from the steamer, but, the hell with that- out of the microwave. The gun range, of all places, is closed for the month. Wrenching in the shop and cooking for the duration, I guess, with breaks to run a psychotic setter.
Weather the storm, all my friends. The world needs every double gun fan it has!
Best,
Ted
Weather the storm indeed Ted! Grilled a chunk of elk backstrap and roasted some Yukon Gold 'taters and asparagas in the oven Tuesday night. Washed that all down with a bottle of cheap Costco red wine (Josh!) and had some homemade rice pudding to top it all off. Living well is the best revenge! I just checked and my gunclub is still open so... maybe tomorrow?
Whole damn town is closed up, Lloyd. Maria volunteered at the school this week, and worked a whole shift today. I worked on Friday, running a Heidelberg 82 folder to produce an essential book for U of M hospital. I get called in for things that HAVE to print, but, the place is a ghost town.
Be well, Lloyd.
Best,
Ted
That looks mighty fine to me. And I'm starving to boot, so it just adds to the attractiveness. I'll have settle for antelope curry tonight. It will be great, but wont look as good and won't photograph well either.
I eat plenty of stuff that doesn’t photograph as well as it eats. Chilies and soups seem better on day two or three, but lose some visual appeal in the process.
Hunker down, fellows. Let the bug go by.
Best,
Ted
hunker, hunker, hunker...
This is going to be a long hunker. Really long, and if we unhunker too soon, that bastard will come back with a vengeance.
I cannot believe how the country is coming together on this hunkering down thing. Never would have believed we could do it. Well except maybe for the spring breakers, but they are under 20 and immortal in their own eyes...Geo
Geo. I'm like you, a bit amazed. Good thing though. It will make a difference.
Had a spare 14 hours so I smoked a Brisket.
Man, that looks good, Bob. Do you use a wood pellet grill/smoker, or the more traditional type? Most folks around here are using Traegars or Rec Tecs. The Rec Tec is home based about 50 miles from me, so they are really catching on around here.
SRH
I converted a Turbo 1000 to smoking duty.
Real wood only, mostly Hickory.
Chips far right, lowest flame, about 200 degree kettle temp.
Since this photo, I began to separate the "Point" from the "Flat" and cook the Flat using an oven recipe.
It's too thin compared to the Point, and doesn't stand up to the cook time.
Does anybody remember when we were "ten feet tall and bullet proof" and thought the VC/NVA couldn't get us? The "spring breakers" think the same thing about the virus. I hope learning their lesson doesn't cost them as much as it cost us.

Glad you graduated from that university Magna cum home, Mike. Thanks again for your service.

Hey Ted,
Knife inside, spoon outside.
Blade of knife pointed inside towards plate.
Do you know why?
....The "spring breakers" think the same thing about the virus. I hope learning their lesson doesn't cost them as much as it cost us....
Chances are they would, but may the spring breakers never have to step up to the plate, in large part because of those who came before them.
The one thing I still wonder about, with so many before, why does this 'pandemic' break new ground. Next time, the first questions might not be about health, but motivations. I don't wish anyone ill, but there are so many other conditions, past and ongoing, where it's ok to look the other way.

No, Bob. My Mom and Dad probably figured they were doing OK if I ate with silverware.
Lonny might know. But, I wouldn’t bet on that, either.
Best,
Ted

brand spanking new virus....with zero immunity in world population. and, to some degree, i agree with those who question why another flu-like virus is such a big deal.
i think the answer is two pronged; first the lack of immunity, and second (and maybe having greater impact) is related to logistics. my step daughter is a PA, who works as a hospitalist under the head of infection control locally. they are both extremely concerned about this situation, have told me they expect chaos.
i suspect we are about to see the shortcomings of our health care delivery system revealed in graphic detail. hope i'm wrong....
graybeard,
The difference here is that the rate of growth for this new critter is amazingly fast. 10 to 60 times faster than the average flu virus. Add to that, it is quite severe and has a very high mortality rate for some groups of people, and you have something that is in another league.
You are right about the those shortcomings issues, but we didn't need an epidemic to see that.
i suspect we are about to see the shortcomings of our health care delivery system revealed in graphic detail. hope i'm wrong....
There is not a single health care system in any nation on this planet that is designed and equipped to deal with a massive influx of severely ill patients. It takes both time and money to mobilize for something of this magnitude. The quarantines and shutdowns are only intended to try to prevent the system from being overwhelmed all at once. Epidemiologists have been warning that something like this was only a matter of when it would happen, not if it would happen. It will be interesting to look back 5-10 years from now, and see if we learned anything from this.
another great post from keith...
Well Ted,
Back in mid evil times when knives were recently added as acceptable tableware,
you didn't always have the pleasure of dining with friendly's.
It was viewed as less threatening to have ones knife turned inwards towards oneself
rather than outwards towards ones enemies, um, er, dinner companions.

I'll drink to that-- But- No More Corona until the plague is over and done with- I'll save the limes for gin and tonics in the summer, with steaks on the grill- salad, corn on the cob- yumm RWTF. USMC 1960-1972
Gin and tonic is medicinal! The lime prevents scurvy. the quinine in the tonic fights malaria and the gin help your attitude! I'm all in with preventative medicine :-)
Nothing wrong with good gin. Straight up, if necessary.
I never understood the attraction of booze, good, or, otherwise.
Are you in a hurry?
Best,
Ted

Don’t you walk through my words, don’t you queer on me pitch....
No hurry at all. Given a bottle of gin generally lasts me 2-4 yrs, definitely not in a hurry. It's just something that has its own unique flavor, like a wine or quality beer.
You lost me on the "hurry" term. ???
More alcohol in booze then beer. Speeds up the process.
Best,
Ted
take perfectly good v8 juice...add vodka, worchestershire, cholulu, s & p...garnish with garlic stuffed olive, wedge of lime and a celery stick...service over glass of ice...makes tomatoe juice even better...
or make a manhattan...
to a glass with five ice cubes, add:
bitters, orange extract and a maraschino cherry...
next add a 1/3 glass bourbon or rye...
then add a 1/3 each red and white vermouth...
stir and enjoy...
I'm in the same camp with the late "Ol' Blue Eyes" Take a tumbler, 2 fingers of bourbon (Dickel for me) 2 fingers of ice cubes, and a splash of branch water-- ow-a-bunga.. RWTF

Ed, every now and then you seem to take a "time out", and are not active on this forum for a couple of weeks (it may not not be quite that long but it is nice when it happens, so I'm being optimistic). Are we close to another one of those times?
C'mon man. You are off the charts with your banter.

could be, just started a really good book..."the splendid and the vile". by erik larson...
give it a try...maybe we can start a book discussion forum here...
during these extraordinary times...
an we could talk about new movies, tv shows, current events, etc...or anything else, but not case colors and gun rights...two boring subjects that we have certainly beaten to death here...
Why waste yer time arguing about a fork ?
When it would be better spent kissing yer arse good bye.
If the virus don't get you the crash of the country will.
