I'm currently enjoying Winston Groom's book on Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill titled "The Allies". He says FDR's father bought him a "fine small-gauge double barrel shotgun" in his youth. Anyone know what that was?

ONE of his is 10 miles from my house smile

The shotgun in 2010 sold for $862,500, setting a record for the most expensive shotgun ever sold at auction.

Sorry, Skeetx and Revdocdrew. This was Franklin, not Teddy. And a small gauge, not a 12 given to "beetle" in WWII. Would have been in 1890s and used by Franklin to get "specimens" in the manner of Audubon. Maybe a 410 or 28 ga.

After the war, "Beetle" Smith served as President Truman's Director of Central Intelligence. In that capacity, he convinced Truman--based on evidence compiled by a CIA counterintelligence officer--that British diplomat "Kim" Philby was a Soviet spy. Truman sent Philby packing, and it cost him his government job. Unfortunately, it was another 10 years before the Brits determined that Philby had been spying for the Russians for nearly 25 years. He fled to Moscow rather than facing trial.

Interesting to note that the Grant given to General Smith has a good bit more drop in the stock than one would find on most British doubles.

Wrong Roosevelt, Skeet-X-- You have Teddy's A.H. Fox 12 bore. Teddy and FDR were cousins, I believe. RWTF

Good grief, the public school system strikes again. At least his two line post didn't include any spelling errors.

Judging by the extreme anti-gun sentiments being expressed by Democrat Presidential candidates, it isn't likely any will be willing to be photographed with any kind of firearm like Franklin Roosevelt.

On the other hand, the extreme anti-gunner John Kerry made a point of going goose hunting at the Molnar farm in Mahoning County, Ohio when many local sportsmen were concerned about his stance.

Kerry went in with a new shotgun and brand new camo hunting clothes. News Reporters were not permitted to go along to witness the hunt. After a short while, a couple shots were heard, and then Kerry emerged with two geese. The local paper had a large color photo and story on the front page.

I always felt that was a Democrat I.Q. test. Quite a few are not too bright when it comes to giving up the Constitutional rights of law abiding citizens to own firearms. One of the Debate questions last night dealt with what to do about existing guns in private hands... not just banning future sales. In spite of that, some here will still be in denial.

I don't see how anyone of sound mind could vote for one of the Democrat mOrons running for president.

If you want to know what General Walter Beedle Smith looked like in 1955- See the Audie Murphy movie "To Hell and Back" circa 1955- staring Audie Murphy front and center- It is true that he was turned down in his efforts to enlist in the USMC in 1941- ended up in the Army 3rd Inf. Div.-- the rest, as they say, is history. It is also reported that Eisenhower's C.O.S. "Beetle"Smith made 2 moves that had an influence on WW2 ETO: To wit-- (1) Recommended that "Ike" demote Patton and ship in back to the States in disgrace, after the Sicilian Slap-fest events- and (2) Pushed "Monty's Fubared from the Get-Go Op "Market Garden"--

IMO-One of many strong points that "Old Blood & Guts" possessed was his reliance on accurate Intel- and his G-2, Col. Oscar Koch was on "top of his game" in that regard. RWTF

FDR was reported to have done some waterfowl hunting, even while wheelchair bound- Believe I read he shot a Remington Sportsman Model 11 (A-5 clone)-- does anyone know if Harry S. Truman owned or shot any firearms--??? Old Harry's former career as a haberdasher shows in this foto- nice fitting suit.. RWTF

According to the post below
"Presidential firearms appear in other parts of the country, too. Harry S. Truman was an avid hunter, shooter and firearms collector, but one firearm held a sweet spot in his heart. It was a London-made guild gun, a percussion 12-gauge side-by-side passed down from his father John Truman. According to Mr. Truman's cousin, Fred, Truman's dad fell from his horse onto the shotgun and thereby damaged the hammer. The shotgun is marked by George Goulcher; Goulcher was an ex-Pat Brit living in New York who made components used by gunsmiths unable to create their own parts."
