A friend just gave me a beat up old single shot with the name "Shattuck's Perfection" as a banner on the buttplate. No other information stamped on the gun anywhere except for the serial number.
I told him I was virtually sure it was one of the Crescent store brand guns and that I'd look it up. Shattuck did not appear in the Crescent list, so I googled it and discovered a new (to me) gunmaker.
Shattuck Manufacturing Company was an actual gunmaker in the 1880's and produced single-shots like the one I have, often with 'nickel plated' actions, as well as pistols and about a thousand sxs guns. They were located in Hatfield, MA. If anyone is interested in another obscure maker, Google has some information.
It doesn't appear to be a shooter, but it is another curiosity to toss in the closet. Anybody ever heard of Shattuck?...Geo
From the appendix to Bob Hinman's "The Golden Age of Shotgunning": Hinman has Shattuck in business from 1878-1908. As noted above, mostly inexpensive guns. "In 1899 offered a hammerless double barrel with twist barrels at $25." Sounds as if that must have been their top of the line gun. He adds that the firm was previously Hyde & Shattuck.

I have been waiting to start this very topic to try to piece together information about the Shattuck gunshop but I am glad to see it just started!
C.S.'s older brother DeForest Shattuck was my great great grandfather and was the shop foreman and inspector in Hatfield. DeForest's son, Barnard Shattuck, was a machinist at the factory.
My father (Barnard Shattuck) and I (James DeForest) have been researching the archives trying to piece together a solid, fact based history of our family's gunshop. We have 15 pistols/guns in our collection, including serial number 1 of the American 8 gauge shotgun and two SxS's (s/n 2271 and 5916) - I'm always looking for more quality examples.
I also have the only known example of C.S. Shattuck's original trade brochure listing all the models and configurations from September 1st, 1896. 1896, incidentally, was the first year C.S. advertised for his new "Double Hammerless" model. The other models were "New Top Lever," the "Perfection Side Snap," the "American Side Snap," and his most popular "American" (which had been on the market since 1881). Later on there were the Shattuck's "Perfection" (possibly just a renamed "New Top Lever") as well as the "New American Side Snap."
Unfortunately, C.S.'s records were lost after his death and he had no offspring. My great grandfather, Barnard Shattuck, was the closest thing he had to a son; however, he died around 1946 and most of the information we have from him was passed down orally to my now deceased grandmother (Margaret Shattuck) to my father.
I would really appreciate any help the community could lend me to preserve this slice of history. My intent is to first build a website specifically for C.S. Shattuck firearms and hopefully have enough information to write a book.

I had heard the name Shattuck many years ago in reference to a Big Goose gun. I believe it was an 8 gauge but may have been a 10. A single barrel in either case. I far as I can recall I never saw one of them, had just heard the name.
Sears listed a single barrel 10 gauge Goose gun in their 1908 catalog with a 36" twist barrel & weight of 9 lbs. It had a top snap action with rebounding hammer & the illustration shows a removable hinge pin with of lever type for removal.
I do not know if Shattuck built this gun for them or not. I seem to recall in an earlier catalog, perhaps around 1902 they listed a Single 8 gauge.

The family made seven different single barrel models over the years. From your description, it sounds like you have a "Perfection Top Lever" (which was a new model for the early 1900s and had the new "nitro safe" barrels). Also available from circa 1893ish was the "Perfection Side Snap" which was made until the factory closed. Most examples are in 12 gauge; however, there was also a 16 gauge option. Barrels were available in decarbonized steel for $6,fine london twist for $7, and laminated steel for $8 - add another 50 cents if you wanted an auto ejector!

Hello, I am new to this forum. I know this is a very old thread but thought this was the best place to post this information.
I own a very unusual Shattuck's Perfection shotgun. I inherited it from my father who got it from his father. The gun has a smooth bore, like a shotgun, but is much smaller gauge that any shotgun I've seen. In fact a 38 caliber round or a 357 magnum round fits perfectly in the chamber. It holds one round and the action is falling-block. The gun is small, about 33" overall with a removable barrel that is about 18". I'd love to get more information about the gun if anyone has any.
Not sure how to do it exactly, but I'm more than willing to post photos.

Is it rim fire of center fire? In the 1896 UMC catalog they offer .38 Short & Long Colt shot cartridges, .38 Smith & Wesson shot cartridges and .38 Short & Long rim-fire shot cartridges.

Because it is a falling block, it is hard to say for sure, but I'd guess with a fairly high degree of confidence that it is a center fire.

Wow. Beautiful condition.
Smooth bore, get a chamber cast, and some cartridges. Probably is a 38 shot shell.
It looks aged, but un used in recent history.
