Can anyone provide insight about ( other than the gauge/chamber marks) the water table proof marks below? Three “pyramids” or triangles meaning/ the “S”?
Thank you ,
Best Regards,
JBP
J.B.Patton,
The "S" looks like the "house mark" for Schilling Forge. The photo of the triangles is not clear enough for ID, It might be a post war "Quality" mark from East Germany or more likely a company logo.
Mike
Can't see the photo very well. Looks like three adjacent triangles with an "S" in the center one. If so, that's Simson.
Simson
1900-1940 Suhl. Trademark: Three “S” in a pyramid, or “Astoria”.

Triple S is Simson, after the 1933/34 absorption/commandeering/takeover but odd, odd that the Schilling touchmark of a S in a Chevron is present along w/ the bore and chamber depths(16 bore / 70mm)? Was there a brace of doubles, 1 & 2?

I thought the gun seems unusual, it has Spezial Gewuhr Lauf Stahl three ringbarrels ( sourced from Sauer?) and a sideplated box lock action, ejectors .
Could it be a War era Simpson with Shilling action? Maybe a Trade gun built from available parts? No other indicators of manufacturer on barrels or receiver anywhere.

JBP
I wonder if there was another matching rifle that came with the gun at some point- the engraving has roe deer and boar, along with asstd birds and dogs......
Late 30’s gun?
JBP
So, Spezial Gewehr Lauf Stahl w/ 3 Rings? What is the proof date on the flats? Unless it cobbled together during the latter stages of WWII or thereafter, it would have to be date bound between the dates of 1933/1934 & 1939 when Gustloff absorbed Simson. Is Simson in cursive on each tube?

I see 0533 on the flats- but serial no number anywhere.
No Simpson cursive on the barrels ?$&?!@!!! Weird.
JBP
So is the serial number 2290? If the 0533 is near the other proofmarks, that would fit nicely at May 1933. For a few months around this time they had another name but I can't raise it for the moment. WAFFA maybe?

Wonder if the Modell is in this handout????

JB,
If the gun had a barrel set with rifle , it would likely have a set trigger.
Mike
So the top rib is devoid of any text? What is on the butt-plate?

" Bericht über den Werdegang der Firma Simson und Co. Suhl.- Mitteilung von Simson und Co.an die Geschäftsfreunde zur Fortführung der Geschäfte duch die Berlin-Suhler Waffen- und Fahrzeugwerke GmbH "Waffa" Berlin und Suhl vom 20.09.1933 sowie Aufstellung über alle Schriftstücke der Akte."
So from September 20th 1933, the name of the concern was WAFFA; therefore, an offering from May 1933 would still be Simson.
Astoria was a trade-name centred around motorcycles or rubber baby buggy bumpers and me thinks it was during the time of BSW??

The likely location for a date would be on the barrels, not action flat. The barrel and forearm iron would normally have the same serial number as the receiver. Is there a number that appears in all 3 places? Does the logo match either of the ones on the flyer posted by Raimey?
Mike
On a sidenote Birmingham Small Arms Company lodged a legal complaint against BSW for the acronym. Details would be most interesting.

Any idea of which grade this would be if a Simson?
( sorry, poor photo)
Thanks

As to the question of whether the gun had a second barrel set with rifle barrel; there is no set trigger, so I don't believe there was a second set. With extensive engraving like this, there is plenty of room for several different game scenes.
Mike
There is a “2” on one of the barrel lug, any significance?
JBP
JBP,
I don't think there is much significance. If there was a "2" inlaid in gold or silver on top of the barrels, that would show it is the #2 of a pair of guns.
