Hello fellas,

Can anyone supply me with the Volume/Issue number of an article that appeared in DGJ many years ago (re: Damascus barrels) where the maker's name was worked into the crolle barrel pattern. Seems like it was in one of the DGJ volumes from the first ten years, but am not finding it. I do remember that the article showed the names of both 'Pieper' and 'Remington' within the barrel pattern.....and went on to explain that it was largely a lost art. 'Thanks' in advance for a point in the right direction.

You could just contact the double gun journal directly and ask them for the issue.

Can't help with the DGJ reference, but it came from Jean Puraye's original 1966 article was published by the Musee d’ Armes de Liege and reproduced in The American Rifleman, April & May, 1976

There is a member on here and 16 gauge Society who bought a Pieper hammer gun about 4 years ago. Barrels had been blued but needed help. In taking a closer look he discovered not only were they Damascus but they were a set that had "Pieper" woven into the design.

To those of you that responded.... 'Thank You'. Those are the pictures, Drew, that I remember from that DGJ article. I do have a complete set of the journals and the Indices, and looking under 'Damascus' didn't do the trick. It could easily be in a different article within DGJ that will just take some thumbing through to find.

But your pictures will do just fine to convince a skeptical friend that these artisans could actually lay up a riband to result in a name appearing within the Crolle pattern.

Happy to help Rob. As you know, it all starts with the lopin / billet being faggotted /piled, and I remain stunned by the artistry and mechanical aptitude that could create such a wonder. How did they possibly do this?!?
