Hi, I was reading about bbl flip on SxS's, and the thought came to me that porting the bbls might be the answer to remedy this.

I think I'm going to have my Hussey Imperial Ejector be the Guinea Pig on this one.

I'm going to have my son take the bbls to his shop class and drill the holes, then smooth out the bores with some sandpaper or something in the shop. Then will test and see if it works.

So....what do you think?

Regards

I would just get a oval drill bit and do it at home with the ol Black and Decker.

If it works, stop by and get my AyA for porting. I need it back though by the time I go to Africa.
Posted By: Shotgunjones Re: SxS Porting - 04/17/11 02:59 AM
I saw something similar, though it was an O/U.

Years ago I sold a 101 trap gun to some old codger who apparently was suffering from advanced brain shrinkage.

He ported it on his drill press.

Four rows of uneven jagged holes complete with drill runoff, and you could see the marks in the stock from the vise.

If I'm lyin', I'm dyin'.

I'm a believer in doing whatever you want to your own personal property, ie it's OK to customize any gun. However, had I known his intentions, I never would have sold the gun.

Decent gun turned into scrap.

I made the terrible mistake of porting an O/U Perazzi trap gun I used for trap doubles thinking it would help me move to the second target more expeditiously. I found out, however, all it really did was blow smoke/gunpowder in my eyes if I was shooting into a head wind. Bad idea and I would never do it again to any gun, not even a Mossberg!

I'm not worried, my son will wrap the stock with an old tee shirt, so I won't worry about vise marks. I also think he'll use some kind of guide so the holes will be even.

My boy has talent.

Best!

If you decide to drill holes into that Hussey, Greg, make sure the result sounds like a calliope. Long winter up there, eh?

You know, if it does not work cut the barrels off at 25 in and you will have the perfect gun. The boy ought to be able to find a hacksaw in shop class. They might even have a power hacksaw. Just buff barrel edges on the belt sander when done and the old girl ought to be good to go again. You can peen around the barrels for the last inch and half to put some choke back in them as well.

I heard about an insurance salesman who had his name ported into the barrels of his gun.

Greg,

Come on, April Fools Day has passed. We know you are fooling with us! No one on this fine board would drill holes in ANY SxS barrels! Leave that to those who live with O/U's!!!

The great thing about ported guns is, they have saved me allot of money. Every time I see a gun I like and it is ported, I walk away. Each to his own, but I don't like the looks of a ported gun and I hate to shoot aside of one on the trap field. But, it is your gun, drill it as much as you like.

Now, would I do that? I'm always late anyway!

I once shot Helice with a guy who had a 21 that was ported, I almost threw up.
Greg, if you port your Hussey I will have to as well since mine is the #2 gun you know.

I did general gunsmithing for a couple years, taking in mostly repairs and recoil pad jobs. Every once in a while something unusual would come in. One day, some ol trap shooter brought in a 870 barrel that had this big ol tall bridge truss of a rib on it. I'm talking like 2" tall. It was a real piece of nice machine work on that rib. It had little posts at the muzzle, mid point, and breach, which had male dovetails. The rib had the other half of the dovetails and the dovetail was damaged. He wanted it repaired. I welded it up and refinished it to his satisfaction. When he came to get the gun, he asked if it could be ported. I wasn't in the store, but apparently the clerk said I could probably do it. I did. I simply copied a Browning sporting clays gun port pattern. I used an indexing head on a mill and drilled the holes undersize followed by openning them up with a brand new carbide endmill. Then I lightly honed the bores to deburr it. Never heard back from that guy. It was always that way when nothing was wrong.

Have ported quite a few barrels for shooters over the years all single barrel though, mostly 390s 391s and such like. If you use like Chuck stated a dividing head on a mill and a digital readout there should not be a problem. I personally hate porting just because of noise factor.

I have one gun, a 20g Browning SC gun, that has porting. I'm not big on porting, especially on a 20g.

Recently acquired this older Ithaca M-37T and was wondering if I could have it ported inconspicuously among the engraving and who would you would recommend to do the work? Opinions please.

Please tell me that you are joking.
Posted By: Walter C. Snyder Re: SxS Porting - 04/18/11 02:09 AM
Well it would reduce muzzle flip on the second shot of doubles wouldn't it? Its just an Ithaca pump after all. Probably should not even have post it here. Shotgun police, I am sorry and won't do this again, promise.

Forget the holes
Just soldier on an adjustable choke and paint it red

I have a friend that does silouette carving in wood and metal. I'm sure he could do some kind of trace porting around those swirls. You probably wouldn't even notice it was done. All you have to do is ship that lowly pump gun to me for a while - he may even be able to do something with that wood too.
Very nice indeed
Posted By: RHD45 Re: SxS Porting - 04/18/11 02:45 AM
I gotta say the high grade Ithaca pumps do more for me than the Winchester model 12's that have been factory done. Never have been able to put my finger on it as I prefer the Model 12's looks when comparing plain jane guns.

Hump, Well here is what I think is the best solution. What do y'all think? laugh
Posted By: Buzz Re: SxS Porting - 04/18/11 03:10 AM
Walter: I think the Cutts is the ultimate solution and wouldn't a pair of those look great on a Boss or Purdey Side by Side! (They might not fit , though??).
Posted By: Walter C. Snyder Re: SxS Porting - 04/18/11 03:12 AM
A closer look.

Posted By: Buzz Re: SxS Porting - 04/18/11 03:19 AM
That really is a beautiful gun!! I don't know if a Cutts Compensator would really help the looks of that gun?? It sure would make it louder when it went BOOM though.

Any truth to the saying that bottom ejecting pump guns were invented to give lots of canvas to the engravers?
Posted By: Chuck H Re: SxS Porting - 04/18/11 11:53 AM
Walt,
Is that the pattern you custom ordered on the new 28g?
Posted By: Walter C. Snyder Re: SxS Porting - 04/18/11 12:56 PM
Chuck, This gun is a $2500 grade made about 1960. The engraving pattern I ordered was the earlier $1700 grade as shown below.

very very nice.

I have heard Bill Mann is engraving the new Ithaca guns. Is that true?
Posted By: Walter C. Snyder Re: SxS Porting - 04/18/11 01:26 PM
Its Bill Mains and it is true. He engraved the 28 ga. shown.

That was my thinking but my response would have been much cruder.
Posted By: MrCrockett Re: SxS Porting - 05/03/21 01:55 AM
If you want porting on a target gun, Angleport is the way to go imho. They do excellent trigger work as well on most target guns.
Posted By: AZMike Re: SxS Porting - 05/03/21 12:44 PM
To stop muzzle jump you are better off hanging a dead cat from the barrel than porting!
Posted By: Saskbooknut Re: SxS Porting - 05/03/21 12:56 PM
Another old guy here who hates ported barrels.
As already said, on several occasions ported barrels
saved me from buying another gun that I really didn't need.
I'm not much of a fan of extended choke tubes on a side by side or a Cutts compensator on a pump gun, either.
Posted By: Stanton Hillis Re: SxS Porting - 05/03/21 01:50 PM
I have a Wingmaster with a very hard to find 34" vent rib Remington barrel. It was used for card shooting and a previous owner did indeed port it with a drill, in a pattern which couldn't have been intentional.

I have considered having the holes microtigged and restruck, then blued. Looks like death eating a cracker.

Back in 1985 or so, when I was a young aspiring trapshooter, I sold a Winchester 101 trap gun to an old codger to fund my next (and hopefully better) trap gun.

The next week he asks me to look at it. He states proudly "I ported it!".

He sure did. On his drill press complete with marks where the drill ran off because he's never heard of a center punch. None of the jagged holes were in line with each other or at the same angle.

The best part may have been the deep marks in the stock from the vise jaws.

I was speechless. It's his property and he can destroy it if he wants but honestly had I known his plan I wouldn't have sold it to him.

I'm guessing it still recoils.

But for a second opinion, it's ugly too...

A crowning touch on a Thread like this would be for Greg to post photos of his Hussey Imperial Ejector with a bunch of holes Photo-Shopped into the barrels. It would be interesting to see just how gullible some of the guys would be with their responses.

The guy who recently told us about chopping 6" of the barrels of a Colt Model 1883 to make a Cowboy Action gun would probably think ventilating the muzzles of a $10,000 Hussey is a wonderful idea. Of course, neither act is anywhere near as dumb as being a gun owner who votes for anti-gun Democrats. Unfortunately, the guys who admit to supporting anti-gunners aren't jerking our chain.
