I have a few brass, 12 gauge, paper lined shotshell cases. The headstamp reads...Eley's No. 12 Ejector...London. The brass portion of the case is 2 1/4" long and the paper lining extends 1/4 of an inch beyond the brass. Can anyone identify this case and the reason for the unusual configuration?

These were produced by Eley in or about the 1890’s.

The brass case was intended to avoid binding in the chamber and avoid fouling the ejection of the fired case.

The exposed paper end was to permit a rolled turn-over to be applied to retain the top wad.
