Unfortunately I can’t see any of the photos on this thread, no doubt because of my current problem with imgur.

If I could I doubt if I would be impressed by the impressed chequering.

I started out shooting a Stevens single shot .410. Inherited from my older brother. The first shotgun i ever bought with my own money was a Stevens 420 OU in 20ga. On the plus side, it always went bang. On the minus side, it had the handling characteristics of a 2 x 4. Made a Marlin 90 feel sleek in comparison.

People that shoot have no trouble understanding the comparison.

I’ll post a couple more pictures. It is in very nice condition.

In 1937, Savage Arms Corp. introduced three new hammerless break-action guns -- Model 220 single barrel, Model 420 over/under (and the nicer stocked Model 430) and a side-by-side with a trigger-plate action the Model 320 --

Savage Arms Corp. must have decided competing with their A.H. Fox line wasn't a good idea and teh Model 320 was gone by the 1939 catalog. So, to get a lower priced double they added the Fox Model B to their offerings with an insert included in some of their 1939 A.H. Fox catalogs.

Savage took the internal parts of their J. Stevens Arms Co. No. 530 and put them in a slightly nicer profiled, black gun metal finished frame with a bit nicer stock and called it the Fox Model B. The Model B was included in their 1940 A.H. Fox catalog --

I have my dad's Stevens Springfield 16 gauge. Whoever coined the 'phrase "handles like a pig on the end of a shovel" was describing that gun. It was the only shotgun he ever owned and he was deadly on birds with it.

I'm glad you added that your Dad was deadly with it. Those of us fortunate enough to have a number of great handling guns often look disparagingly at what is called "entry level guns", that handle sluggishly. Then when we see someone who can shoot one of them lights out we wonder how. The old mantra "Beware the man with one gun." is definitely true. I've a great friend who has used a Ruger Red Label and a Stevens 311 for almost all his shooting needs for at least twenty years. I've never witnessed anyone that can kill doves and ducks as efficiently as he.

Much use can totally overcome the poor handling characteristics of a gun. That, and muscle memory, is all it takes.
