This gun is by Charles Giddings. The Giddings family contained gunmakers and engravers in New York. They were apparently very skilled, but production must have been small. In roughly 50 years, I have seen two Giddings marked guns, one by Charles Giddings, and one by [his son ] George Giddings. I have heard of another George Giddings gun of unusual design.

I’d say it was British, not German. I have a British hammer gun with very similar action shape including the fences, although not quite as nicely engraved. Mine probably dates from the 1880s or 1890s, but has been sleeved and the original proof marks are gone. However, the engraving on this one is far superior to that on mine, nice as mine is.

I wonder if Giddings bought the gun in the white and finished it or bought the gun finished and I engraved and then engraved the side locks.
