Can someone explain why the barrels aren't flush with the breach balls?

I will try to begin this process by asking questions 1. Are the barrel serial numbered to the gun? H&H marked? 2. What the original caliber/gauge? 8 or 10 and now the barrels are 12? 3. Have you tried the gun and are the primer strikes centered on the primer? 4. Did it start life as an H&H BP double rifle and have other barrels fitted? At least a start Mike p.s. http://www.gunsinternational.com/guns-fo...un_id=100852865

It's still a double rifle and it's not mine yet. Photos are all that I have but I did not like the mismatch height. Made me also thing that it might have been rebarreled with old barrels. I see the one on GI also has that mismatch height so could have come that way.

I have had several guns through the shop over the years where the breech balls were over sized compared to the barrels. I have never been able to determine why. Possibly just the fashion of the day. I never cared much for the look myself. All the ones I have seen were early guns, relatively soon after breechloaders became the norm.

I've seen a few H&Hs with variations on that theme. The most recent one had little "nibs" atop the breech, which sort of framed the sight picture. Totally original.
