What kind of round is the 400/360 in a double rifle?

What kind of hunting would be applicable?

Any advice at all would be appreciated.

1cdog,
There are a couple versions of the 400/360,both of which are good useful cartridges, appropriate for US game. Cases can be made from 9.3x74R and 9.3 bullets may be used, subject to "slugging" the bore. Some may use 35 cal. bullets.Think of a shortened 9.3x74R,with slightly less power.

300 grains bullet at 2000fps.
Would work for most everything in US but I would not use on grizzly bears.

It's basicly very similar to the 9.3X74R. I'd use it against anything here and most of Africa.

If you're interested in the cartridge itself do some research as I believe it was developed by Daniel Fraser during the cordite era.

An examination of the Proof Marks on the barrels and Water table will indicate whether it was Nitro or Black Powder Prooved.
The book British Sporting Rifle Cartridges by Fleming should give you several commercial loads, although these will certainly be of powders no longer available. The bullet weights and velocities will be given. I'd check my copy, but it is out on loan, which reminds me it's over due for return.

I wouldn't recommend it for dangerous game. Even Moose is a tad large and I would definately hesitate using on Bear or Buffalo. Just about every other game animal in the USA could be taken by it. For Africa it's handy for soft skinned game but not the 'Big Five' Some may differ in opinion, but we Brits didn't make the much larger calibre double rifles for just the hell of it.
