Was surfing around looking at 21's and this one showed up with a three digit serial number in three places and an extra 5 digit serial number on the barrel flats.

What is going on?

Any of the Model 21 experts have a comment on this one?

Buffed before reblue job. Look at the edges on top of the barrels.

I'm certainly not a Model 21 expert, but 37405 would be a bit too high for a Model 21 serial number. The 566 is where the serial number should be on a gun of that vintage.

The devil is in the details. To be exact note the top edges of Model are gone, the middle of Winchester is gone, the AUG is almost gone. The other barrel text is worse. Also the barrel flats just look rough and the text on the barrels that should read Winchester proof steel has been so polished or buffed it is almost all gone.

So what you have is a refinished gun that is a decent shooter. It must have been fairly pitted to need that much polishing unless it was done by a complete idiot. The barrels should be fine, most 21's were built like Russian T34 tank drivers, heavy, stout, large mustache, short, big hips. The male drivers were not so heavily mustachioed. That was according to my late uncle, a tanker who thought Patten was the best general ever.

It never left Winchester looking like that. If it goes for a decent price someone will be very happy until he shows a Winchester collector his "mint, low serial number gun". If he pays north of what it is worth I hope he just enjoys the heck out of it and does not learn the difference.

Proper barrels should look more like these.

The gun in question sold for $4,025

Within the past six months, after a long search I paid $2,700 for this:

No 21 collector paid that much for it. The fact that it was refinished, and not that gently, would turn them off. It is a decent looking shooter and has a low serial number which attracts some buyers. Funny thing is that I think all the receivers were roughed out in the first year or two so one could argue that all 12 ga.
21's are the same basic age.
