The coyote has an incredible capacity to reproduce in the face of great pressure. If not kept in check they will form large packs and take large animals as they demonstrated in Yellowstone Park until the reintroduced wolves thinned them out. They will not dissappear from any location once colonized, and heavy hunting pressure only knocks them back for a short period-they rebound within a year and need thinning again. In Arizona if it weren't for a couple varmit hunting clubs we would probably be without Antelope completely. The clubs, in concert with Game and Fish target the coyote populations in critical antelope calving areas just before the calves are due. If they don't get enough of the coyotes the calves are all lost for the year. Poison, iron jaw traps and professional hunters couldn't get rid of them so a few opportunistic shots during other hunting seasons isn't going to do it either. We have had kids attacked around Phoenix, small dogs and cats are quite simply coyote snacks and are taken from inside fenced yards in the middle of town. Their only real natural enemy is wolves and no one wants them around either.
