Strange "weapon" being toted by the chap in the foreground of CC's photo! Reminds me of the scene in "The Longest Day" when Lord Lovett's commandos are marching along with the pipes.

Amazing what success the airborne troops had that day, given the fact that they were scattered all over hell. Initiative and guts. In the 82d Airborne Museum at Ft Bragg, there's a simple urn of earth--the soil of free France, from Ste Mere Eglise, the first town liberated--given by the citizens of that town to the men who freed them. Very moving, when you know the story of Ste Mere Eglise. That's where Red Buttons hung from the church steeple in "The Longest Day".

Exactly my intention. Our countries (mine and yours, King) are more focused on comforts and benefits today, than on founding principles. We ask not what we can do for our countries, but what our countries can do for us.

We both have superb armed forces, but our volunteers are few and no longer representative of the majority, and our politicians and voters begrudge them adequate support. Our young people think YouTube and FaceBook are real life, and are losing the ability to live without fresh batteries. So, yeah, I guess I am denigrating our countries - or at least the majority of people they now represent.

Whatever the state of our respective populations, I have nothing but great respect for the young men and women we're sending to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan. It may well be a good thing we don't need the numbers we did in WWII, but our much smaller military is pretty darned good.

The military is good, in fact great. I think the problem that people have is that the government is so detached anymore. They do not care one bit what you want or need. Also, what are we fighting for, oil, terrorists, wepons of mass destruction? Why can't the government LEVEL WITH US??? Is everything a big secret or they just that screwed up that they don't know. I love the troops, I love my country, but why doesn't my government love me.
