This past waterfowl season I had one really good day. Used 6 of those USD3,00 factory bismuth shotshells on ducks and 2 on geese. So, 8 shots X USD3,00 = USD24,00. Gas for 180 miles round trip was USD3,40/gal X 9 gal = USD30,60. All other trips this past season had less shooting, maybe average of 3-4 rounds per trip. SO, on a really good day gas is as much or more than shotshells, on bad days, gas is lots more. Most of my 28 gram bismuth reloads cost me USD2,00 or less.

FYI, I only shoot when I think I have good chance of clean kill. Long term average is about 2,0 shotshells per duck or goose bagged, including second finishing shots.

Now and then I hear lots and lots of shooting. Always result of guys with repeaters blasting away with steel loads. Few to very few ducks leave marsh with them. Given price of steel loads, those guys musta spent more for ammo than I did, maybe lots more.
