I just got a gun from the Rock Island auction and the book states that it is a Belgium 20 ga. hammer gun. When I got home and was going over the proofs, I noticed that it is a 24 ga. not a 20 ga. It is a very nice gun but I was hoping that I was buying a 20 ga. Is a 24 ga. worth more than a 20ga.? What would you do about this. I need some advice. Thanks, frank

A 24 gauge is almost never worth more than a 20-if you doubt this, try to buy some ammunition for it. Sounds like you have a legit beef to raise with the auction house. Good Luck with that.

You would hope the auction house would do the right thing but they probably have some type of clause that states you are responsible to inspect before bidding and they aren't responsible for errors. Interesting to see what they do.

Funny this should come up, someone offered me a few boxes of 24's today, I think they're Fiocchis.

I'd ask them to take it back. I'm still waiting on a gun from them. A Henry double rifle. They said it was 41 guage. Hopefully it is a .400

If it were, say, a Parker 24 gauge, then it would be worth a whole LOT more. But that would be because of rarity and the collectible factor. If you're talking about a gun that doesn't have a "name" or something else to make it particularly collectible, and if you're planning on using the gun for hunting, then 24ga is a pain in the butt. You can get shells from Fiocchi, and a lot of people think "neat idea, half way between a 20 and a 28!" However, all 24ga guns, as far as I know, are 2 1/2". Standard load is 5/8oz if I recall correctly. So you have a gun with a bore that's half way between a 20 and a 28, but the shot charge is less than a 28.

Unless you really like it and want to fool around with a 24ga, I'd probably try to get them to take it back. But as mentioned above, wouldn't surprise me if they covered themselves in their auction policy by putting the burden on the buyer.

I agree w/ Ted that a 24 bore probably will never approach the value of a 20 bore unless you find a 24 bore drilling. I've read of a Neumann 24 bore grouse gun, if memory serves me correct. The 24 bore was for shooting songbirds("Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie, ..." or something of the kind - kids chant) along w/ the 32 bore which was more of a specimen/garden gun exported to South America. I think Iver Johnson & H&R made of 24 bore of some sort. From time to time I pick up a box of 24 or 32 bore shot cartridges and Midway carries 24 bore Fiocchi, the only game in town: https://www.midwayusa.com/esearch.exe/search?search_keywords=24+gauge&category_selector=653 .

For them to state in print that it is a 20 ga. is a major misrepresentation. I would insist they take it back no matter their normal policy is. Let us know what they do.

Thanks for all the replys. I think the gun is "neat" being a 24 ga. but I needed a 20ga. I am going to contact them Tuesday and see what Pat will do. They will not let you take a gun apart there anymore to see the proofs. I did a Parker at the last auction and you thought I was stealing parts off the gun. They told me that I was not allowed to take the barrels off without someone watching and I needed to make " arrangements".

I would consider myself lucky if I were you. I have been casually shopping for a 24 gauge recently and there isn't much to be found.
