Hi all, kind of an informal poll here. Here goes.
What type of stock finish do you like on your double guns (High Gloss, Gloss, Satin or Oil)?
Just curious to see whta folks like.
Thaks so much!

If the wood has figure,I like a gloss to bring it out. However,if the wood is plain,I prefer a satin finish.

I don't like high gloss. I'll take satin even if it doesn't show the grain at its best.

I prefer a satin finish that brings out the figure like a high gloss finish. Sure wish someone would invent it. Bill Frech

The one that brings out figure, resists scratches, is waterproof,of course, easily repairable and goes on without driving the owner crazy.

Satin or for utility guns oil finish.

I like a finish that fits the gun. To me, nothing beats original finish, but when that is largely gone or damaged, something as close to original as possible... and a surface finish that fits the other condition factors. An example is the much abused Optimus Lefever that appeared here in it's semi-restored state a week or two ago. The gunsmith, Keith Kearcher didn't go whole hog with new case colors etc., and the recut checkering and stock finish is right in line with the metal. I gotta bite my lip when I'm told a gun is all original finish, and the metal looks like it spent 80 years in a salt marsh duck boat, while the wood shines like Liberaces' piano.

Yeah Keith, like when the seller says "all original finish" and the reciever is all gray and the barrels are half gray, the stock is near black from dirty oil. I don't think any gun left the factory that way.
For finishes, I like all the good looking ones. I looked at the H&H guns priced at over $200k and liked their finishes. They were not satin nor were they 'gloss'. Something near gloss though. My preference in application myself is for Pro-Custom Oil.
