I feel like the youngest son of a poor Duke when I have the Purdey in my hands.
Aw come on jOe, it has some coolness to it. Probably THE James Purdey worked on it some when it was hand built in 1847. The barrel tubes were handmade by "beat and heat" out of strands of steel and iron. Then it was sent back to Purdey and converted to a breechloader by Purdey fifty years later - again by hand. And then 120 years after that it shows up in Amarillo in my gunsafe. The engraving on the locks is 160 years old and that of the action 120. And all for $1,475?
I took it out and shot some Skeets with it Saturday - 160 year old tubes and locks and all.
But yes, I always feel different after I buy a shotgun. I feel Buyer's Remorse and I feel desperation to try to find some way to stop buying shotguns; but then I return to my senses and start surfing the gun dealer websites.
Best,
Mike

Mike, I am amazed that so many people could tell you about your gun. Probably more owner history and written history than I have seen on another gun just picked off the shelf.

Daryl I am too. I am anxious to see if the letter from Purdey's confirms they did the conversion.
And thanks again to all who piped in on the gun.
Best,
Mike

This is from David Maynard at Purdey. Purdey did the conversion! -----Original Message----- From: David.Maynard@purdey.com [mailto:David.Maynard@purdey.com] Sent: Saturday, May 10, 2008 4:44 AM To: Subject: Re: Purdey gun letter for #4236
Dear Mr.
I have looked the 14 bore Purdey Percussion muzzle loading shotgun no 4236 in our records & have found the following information:
Completed in August 1847 for Mr C. Goring. Number 1 gun of a pair. 30" barrels. The original cost of the guns was 105. August 1883 both guns were converted by Purdey's to breech loading centre fire guns with top lever opening, rebounding back action locks & chambered to take 16 bore kynoch perfect brass case cartridges
If you would like this information in letter form posted to their is a charge of 23-50p. Please fax your credit card details. Fax Number 0044 207 355 3297. I hope this information is useful. Yours sincerely
David MaynardSo Purdey did do the conversion. Damn that was fun! Best, Mike
