Mike, I can see your point, she wasn't misled or given bad advise, but also she said her Grandfather died in 1972 and that the note said the gun was worth 5K then. In my opinion Dave is right.
She should have had it appraised, but ignorance is bliss.

Blue book of Gun Values 26th Edition lists the DH 28 ga. at 50% condition at $7,600, add 50-100% for ejectors depending on original condition. Now your over $10k for 50% condition.
