I was taught to shoot by C.G. Potter at Holland's shooting school. (This was when an hour's lesson cost GBP5 and a Royal cost 885!) He was a superb shot and a gentle and much-suffering teacher. The summer after my first lessons, I tried to read everything on shooting I could find. When I returned for a lesson before the next season, I couldn'd hit a thing. He watched me with a mixture of sadness and understanding and said,
"Sir, you've been reading books, haven't you?" I named several books by famous names. He then said, "But sir, you used to be able to kill these birds, now you can't. Shall we go back to what I taught you?" I started to hit high birds again and learned a most valuable lesson.
