Terry,
If you believe you will procede with this project, I think it would be great to have a gunwriter to photograph and follow the process for an article in one of the journals. ME TOO!

I picked the gun up from Keith Kearcher a couple of days ago. I am really happy with the outcome and will have pictures posted soon. Here is what he did: honed ID of barrels, taking out an estimated .001" to remove pits. Polished OD of barrels, then browned. Minimum wall thickness is now .018" left, .020" right, both at about 20" from breech (there was heavy external pitting in that area, perhaps from a bloody handprint). Action was cleaned with steel wool and oil, then lightly burnished to create some reflective difference to display the engraving. When he removed all the external straps etc holding the butt together, he found no glue and significant wear, so it was shot quite a bit after the "repairs" were made. He made steel inserts, glued the stock, then inlaid wood which was a close match to the original. He recreated the factory checkering pattern and refreshed the checkering on the fore end. Finally, he cut new "OPT" to replace the missing letters on the trigger bow tang.
As you will see when I get the photos, it is now a most respectable gun, certainly does not look new, but I think any of us would be proud to own it. I know I am!

I just looked again at the "before" pictures at the beginning of this thread. A bold and gutsy move, taking on the renovation of this lost soul! Congratulations, and I can't wait to see pix of the results...Geo

As the starter of this thread and a member who has a keen interest in restoration I also await your photos. I sincerely hope you will be able to put her back into service.

George, did you notice how similar the wood is to that on my HE Fox? If we had been forced to restock it, I would have picked a blank close to this. Not as flashy as the one on Doug Mann's gun, but absolutely to my taste.
Battle, I may never fire it. I agree it is marginal, at best, as it sits today. I am far more collector than shooter. Keith's work came in UNDER budget, so the budget is part way to a Teague liner. It probably still would not get shot while in my custody, but at least it would be ready for the next 100 years.
