Besides, Mike, I'm such a bad shot I need to be able to carry more shells and a 16 limits the number of shots I can carry...does that make sense?

And as a bonus feature, the yellow 20's are easier to see if you're prone to drop things, but I'm not saying you do...but....

I own 12 & 16 gauge 21's and 12 and 16 gauge Foxes. Every year my 21's get further and further toward the back of the safe. While I still like and admire the 21's. To me, my original Fox guns are more lively and responsive in the field.
In addition engraved barrel wedges like on higher graded Foxes does for me what Viagra does for other guys my age.

I own three 21's with two barrels on each gun. A 12, 16 and a 20. The 12 gets used most often of the three, the 20 when I can and the 16 almost never. The 16 is as heavy as most 12's so it is not a great gun to carry. I shoot it well but just leave it home. The 20 is my little gun when I need to impress the other Winchester snobs. A group I use to shoot with almost die when you mention that you have a 21. They think that they are the toughest guns on earth and do not mind that the gun weights a ton and a half. I am getting older and do not like tote a eight pound gun when I have soo many, a pound or better less, at home.

Buy the Fox. Shoot the Fox and never regret your choice. After your next tour over seas buy the 21 if you do not know hat to do with your money. Or better yet buy land so you will have some place to hunt.

Well after I went to bed you all posted much better post. A few of you ever realize what the question was about. Thanks for the input for sure. I like a 16ga. I am big and strong now, that could change.....LOL So carring a heavy gun isn't that big a deal to me. I actually shoot heavier guns better anyways. I am also glad to see a few of you are concerned with my finacal future. I am pretty well invested. I am also in the process of buying a house for my mom. After all she was a single mom raising two kids and put a safe roof over our heads and filled our bellies. I think I owe it to her to take care of her now. So hopefully within the next few weeks we'll find a house for her she likes and I will close on it. As for property I have some in AK, and am looking to buy some between Bosemen MT and Sun Valley ID. So for another tour, when I do leave here hopefully it will be forever. I will never say never but hope to never need to come back here to make money. So I maybe able to afford both but I can only justify buying one. Its a tough choice but I am leaning very heavy on the Fox. Then find a model 21 to use for my sxs sporting clays gun. I enjoy reading all your post even if they don't stick to the rules I tried to put in place.

1m89,
I've been shooting all of my sporting clays with a 20g for the last few yrs, even though I have plenty of 12g guns. This also led me to shoot most of my game with a 20g lately. I've also taken to shooting a lot of upland with a 410. I've found that I get more personal enjoyment from shooting the smaller bores, regardless of how full my bag is. And that's what it's all about, IMO. So, my next 'large' purchase gun will likely be another .410. That's my story and I'm ssstickin to it.

Chuck

I am from the school of thought that the .410 is fine on pen raised quail and small size game birds. However I don't feel its an ethical hunting tool for wild upland game. Thats my opinion. I have made some great shots with a .410 and said wow I can do that. But I am still not going to hunt wild birds with nothing less then a 28 gauge. I would not take my 30-06 to hunt Cape Buffalo even thought with the right shot I know I could down it.

Go with the Fox. I believe it will hold its value better and fits better for most birds. It won't be as able in the duck blind but everywhere else it should win.

I think CSM would make the Fox as heavy as a 21 if you wanted it that way. Making them heavier is easy for them, lighter can be challenging.

On the gauge choices, I think you're well armed for quail, wild or penraised, with a 28ga. I also find I'm confident I'm well armed for wild S.Dak roosters with my 20g guns using a 1 oz. modern hi-vel load. The .410 is not for everyone, but I've found I've been very pleased with it using 1/2 oz on wild valley quail & dove, and 3" 11/16 oz on pen raised phez.
