If I suspected a local perpetrator in the burglary, I would post, prominently, a $5000 reward for return of the gun and information about the burglar. That may bring someone with information out of the woodwork. I suspect that a gun thief in a case that I am familiar with was "outed" by his wife who was dissatisfied with his lifestyle and having to share space at home with a bunch of stolen guns. It could work for your friend. Good luck.

Eightbore- Advertising is a good idea, but it could cause the slime-ball that stole it to try to 'dispose' or deface it if he felt there was anyone in hot pursuit of it... Pawnshops, gunshops, gunshows would be the first places I'd quietly visit....BUT if the truth is known, some crank-head gang-banger has it stuck in the waistband of his low-rider shorts.........

I realize this is an older thread, but I found the reference to Lloyd Spooner and his registered 357. I would like to contact your friend relative to the owner. Last I knew , my grandmother who married Col. Lloyd Spooner, gave the 357 to Lloyd's family members on the west coast. I have quite a bit of memorabilia of his including some of the Olympic scrolls he earned as well as stuff from his being CO of Ft. Rucker.
i.e. the 357 was given to him by S&W and not use in the 1920 Antwerp Olympics Regards

Since any handgun sold by a gun shop, pawnbroker, or private owner at a gun show must be transferred to the buyer, let me ask this question... Does the process of transfer and doing the Instant Backround Check merely check on the legality of the buyer to own a firearm, or does it also cross reference some database of stolen firearm serial numbers to make certain the gun is also legal, i.e., not stolen?
Voting for anti-gun Democrats is dumber than giving treats to a dog that shits on a Persian Rug

If it was an "off paper" it wouldn't show up. As far as I know the NCIC check only checks the buyer's bon fides and not teh particular firearm
