I was recently given a W.C. Scott shotgun and I was hoping that someone could help me better identify it.
It's labelled W.C. Scott on the sideplate. It's a hammer gun and muzzleloader.
Only other words that I can see on it are "London Fine Twist" on the top rib. It has some, but not alot of engraving ... some flourishes but no game scene. About Parker G grade checkering on wood (approximate amount of checkering). Plain metal butt.
And, I can't find a serial number anywhere ... nor a worn/sanded/filed spot where it might have been.
Any help?

John back then they didn't always have serial numbers put on. Take the forearm wedge out and give the barrels a tap and see if they will come apart from the stock. There will be some numbers/marks on the underside of the barrels that will help.

The early Scott muzzle loaders weren't serial numbered. If It's marked "and Sons" that will give you a key to it's age.

Looking more closely, inside a banner it says "W & C Scott" on the first line, second line says " & Son".
straight grip, 33" barrels not included butt of barrels
on trigger guard, aftmost towards the butt, it has a symbol that looks like a castle in chess
brass? tip of ramrod says "SuperSpeed" on top half and "R?????" on bottom half
bunch of symbols on hidden underside of barrel
end of both barrels (on the butt) have symbols (crossed swords with a flame or crown over them). 3 inches up on both sides is a stylized BP with a crown over it. Immediate swords and flame again ... then again another inch or so.
On right barrel between the last swords adn flame and one prior, there is a "10" then a infinity symbol with the right portion open then an "M"
On left barrel between the last swords and flame and one prior, there is looks to be a tiny hot air balloon or upside down snowman, then partial infinity symbol again and M.R.

oh and a funny looking T or an anchor ... can't tell on the right barrel near the wedge piece ... and another one sideways to it

Based on your description, the marks described are in all probability, Birmingham black Powder proof marks 1855-1868 for a 10 G shotgun. If you post pictures of the marks this can be confirmed.W&C.Scott were,still making and selling muzzle loading guns as late as 1890,s [per a catalogue in my collection.]However these guns would have carried a serial #.

In 1862 the "& Son" was added so we know it was made after that...The Scott book states W & C Scott made muzzleloaders up till about 1890 and not all were serial numbered.

pictures are posted here http://www.flickr.com/photos/26261096@N08/thanks for everyone's help on this. i really appreciate it. also, given the sloppy weld on the barrel end (evident in picture) and the value of this gun, would you have this worked on by a smith to put back into shootable condition and clean up the stock (hairline crack that would need repair) or just leave it a wallhanger as is? very interested in your opinions/thoughts. i have no sentimental value with this gun and am not super interested in shooting a blackpowder muzzleloading shotgun.

Looking at the pics...especially the one of the end of the breech plugs I'd say let it hang it's lived it's best day.
