Walter,
The square jawed Bird dogs and tail angles sure look like Loy's work.

That was my thought as the game scenes look very much like a piece on a signed Loy work. The scroll may be by a different hand. I know Ithaca had more the one engraver work on a gun. eg. Jay Leech did borders, etc, and Bill McGraw did the game scenes.

Walt,

This is a Rem. M17E, not sure of the vintage. Any idea who did this work?

Rob, Sure don't. Not Loy though. It is to bad for us that most gun companies prohibited the engraver from signing their work. A very nice M-17. Is this the one you are trying to buy?? I saw the 16 ga. NID at Gunter's the other day. Pretty much as I sent it to him. He is swamped with work, must stop recommending him.

Walter,
I think that is the answer. Loy did the animals and someone else
did the scrolls. The dogs look too similar to his earlier work but slightly better.

One and the same Walt. I've put it in the back of my mind, if it comes my way, so be it but the owner just lets it get worse. I haven't handled the gun in a couple of years and realize that I never inspected it for a signature. If I ever get another chance I certainly will, if only for the database.

It's good to hear that Gunter's work attracts a demanding clientèle, too bad for you though.

You guys are recommending your gunsmith to others? What are you thinking? By the way, I saw a selection of Walt's guns in a gunsmith's shop the other day. Mine are there too. Don't worry, Walt, I'll never tell. Murphy

The bird's and dog's on your gun look the same as the one's on my Rem. DEO 16ga that is engraved by Loy.

Murphy,
I sure don't. But it will be a lot. Jay Leech started as an apprentice at Ithaca for 10 cents an hour. That was in 1915. Times and values have changed. Perhaps Mr. Ken will give us a guesstiment.
