Greg, while bismuth is a little lighter than lead it is still considerably heavier than steel and my experience is the difference in performance between bismuth and lead is imperceptible. Not so with steel. Biggest problem with bismuth is it's not available.

There is not really a good answer to the .410/non-toxic shot conundrum. Wait till the child is old enough to handle a 20ga and then shoot steel. Children make great retrievers till they get big enough to want to shoot. JMHO...Geo

Wait a minute, you're saying that the whole state of Minnesota is going totally non-toxic on shotshells for all game in 2011?

"Bismuth and TM are both awfully expensive to burn shooting at doves..." I suspect that is the whole reasoning behind the law. Or maybe doves from Minnesota are migrating to Calif. and being eaten by the Condors. Yeah, that sounds plausible. We really need to wake up on this issue and only give our votes to the politicians who are with us. Do they still use lead styphnate in primers? There's an excuse to ban all ammo.

My life-long approach to beginning shooters, especially children and small-framed women, is to down load 12, 16, or 20 gauge to 1/2, 5/8 or 3/4 oz of shot. This opens up choice of guns greatly, often resulting in a much better handling gun than the average 410, and often allows beginner to stay with same gun for a few years. I and those beginners have killed plenty of birds, rabbits and squirrels with those loads.

A very minor thing; however, the singular is "dove" and the plural is "dove" and not doves. The same applies to deer. Deers does not work.Although, Bubba is one and Bubbas are many.

...and all us bubbas will be using non-toxic only, here in MN, for all bird hunting, by the 2011 season. Get used to it. I've yet to shoot either a single dove, or a brace, by the way.
Best,
Ted
