Here is an Early M-11 Premier grade. I once thought it done by Loy but now I am now sure. Any guesses?

You'd think someone who does work like that would want to sign it. Another thought...on another thread here a while back someone said you couldn't tell if a gun had auto ejectors just by looking at it closed. In my opinion, this is an auto eject gun.

Nice engraving. And nice pics. What kind of a setup are you using to take those shots? How much light?

Thanks

Walt, my 10F two barrel set has similar engraving including the unusual portrayal of the railbird. Oddly, the 10F pictured in an old Remington catalog makes my 10F look like a Mossburg in comparison. I guess there were different guns for different customers. My gun has a gold oval with JPS engraved on it. I suspect that my gun is not as ornate as the catalog gun because it was possibly a comp gun. Some comp guns made by other companies are rather plain also, Parker Brothers being an example. I have not identified a signature on the Model 10. Murphy

JPS=John Philip Sousa???Who was engraving at Remington 1910 era besides Loy, The Runge's didn't arrive until after Remington bought Parker (1934ish) as I recall from conversations with the younger Runge. They (Remington) may well have used 'out of house' engravers as did Ithaca when the work load required it.

I guess we have to reread Semmer to refresh our memory about early Remington engravers, Walt. Yes, the Runges migrated to Remington via the Parker connection. The recently deceased Robert Runge followed his father into the engraving art. His grandfather was a barrel maker, also for Parker.

Very nice gun Walter. I looked through all my old Remington Arms Co., Remington Arms -- Union Metallic Cartrige Co., and Remington Arms Co., Inc. catalogues and the guns pictured had the little game scene behind the bolt release button, not surrounding it as on your gun. Your engraver did a better job of balancing the designs on both sides. Then again, the catalogues only show the right side.

From looking at the additional pictures you sent me (thank you very much), which included the barrel address, I'd say you have a Remington Autoloading Gun No. 6 "Premier" Grade. In 1911, young M.H. Dodge combined his two companies and the name was changed from Remington Arms Co. to Remington Arms -- Union Metallic Cartridge Co. Remington Arms Co. called the gun the Remington Autoloading Gun. Rem-UMC began calling it the Model No. 11, and by the 1918-19 catalogue just Model 11. In 1920 the company name changed again to Remington Arms Co., Inc. At some point in time they added lock-screws to the big screws on either side of the receiver. I first see the lock-screws in the little 1929 pocket catalogue that also is the first appearance of the cross-bolt safety. Anyone know if there are guns with the lever safety and the lock screws?
