Thanks for all the help. Can you shoot RST copper #6s through these old guns? Does anyone have any idea what those marks mean on the barrel flat. Thanks

Yes you can shoot 2 1/2" RST copper #6s through this gun. It really isn't an old gun materials and construction wise. The marks on the barrel flats are pretty straight forward. The stylized eagles are the provisional proof of the raw barrels and the final proof of the same when finished. The crown/S indicates the gun was proofed as a smoothbore, the crown/W indicates choked barrels. Crown/U is the final inspection and proof acceptance mark. the circle with 16 inside indicates the shell size the gun was intended to use. The 16/1 says the bore diameter is actually a little tighter than 16ga which is pretty common on German guns. Since there is no shell length dimension stamped (eg 70mm) the chambers are by default 65mm (2 1/2"). 5/28 is month and year of manufacture or final proof. The eagle/nitro indicates the gun was proofed for use with smokeless powder loads (versus black powder). The five digit number on both barrels and the action is probably reference to proof records. The number on the action table, 10239, and the 39 deep in the action would indicate this is the serial number as it would have been put there prior to final assembly. Or it may be the proof house re serialed the whole thing as the barrels lacked the 10239. There are often little mysteries among the marks.

The Americans had a short stay at the factory after the war and shortly after the Russians had control of Suhl and purportedly move equipment back to Russia. I contacted Krieghoff a few years ago for a friend who wound up with a pre-WWII SxS and does not have Internet access, and that's what they told me: All the equipment sent back to Russia, and all records were confiscated too.

Jerry; Thanks for all the information. That 10239 serial # is stamped on the bottom of the barrels just in front of the flat. If what you paid for your gun is what these guns are worth, I overpaid a little. Although I really like the gun so I'm happy. I ordered 2 cases of 16s from RST today, some #8s for fun and the copper 6s for pheasants. I don't have a choke gauge. Was there standard chokes for these guns like F/F, M/F, I/M?

most of those guns are full and fuller, which would be verboten for slugs but you should be fine with those RST's.Real nice find ans don't worry about paying to much,as long as those barrels are sound pre war 16's will always have a market when you want ot get out of it.
Nice find Tom, looking forward to pics this fall of some ditch parrots and that Krieghoff.
One small addional note on Kreighoff,they where also recipients of "appropriated" goods when the Third Reich was in power,Simpson's gun making equipt was given to them for one.Sometimes you win sometimes you lose,sometimes both.

Looks very much like Greeners Rational Stock.
Can't say I v'e seen one like that..apart from WWG's

It is a bit different Franc, but I like it.Its kinda like a perch belly on the top but no buldge on the bottom.Has a Bavarian look no?

Sweep, I don't necessarily think you overpaid. Yours is a nice prewar gun of good quality. Mine had a few problems to correct regarding the barrels,refinished stock and inoperative safety, thin barrel finish,and refinished but well done stock. The seller recognized the chance I was taking on the barrels and was realistic about how long it would stay in inventory after a couple shows around here.
Your gun may have typical Tight and Tighter German chokes. You can measure that to determine what they are. Don't be afraid to have them opened to a more useful combination suited to your needs. Since chokes aren't marked no one can cry about non original chokes ruining collector value. Mine are now skeet and light modified which works well with RST 7/8oz loads - great for desert quail, Hungarian partridge.
