Its the same old story, the expensive London gun didn't workout, but the Lefever H grade fits to a tee! KY, if the gun didn't fit right off the bat - did you think you were going to grow into it?
My buddy advised me several years ago...don't buy a gun that doesn't fit you. I'll have one bent...but I'm not into stock extensions.

All the measurements added up but the gun was a bust for shooting.
Is there an explanation for this ?

For a test, we could bury one of jOe's 'sleevers in a salt marsh next to a Benelli Nova for 8-10 months.
Any wagers on which one still works after that?

Ted I've only got one sleeved gun...and it's one of my favorites. All I said was I didin't agree with your statement about the reliabilty of English guns...I didn't know you were going tto wage a war on the guns I own. One thing I will bet Teddy bOy iZ....the delicate Purdey will still be shooting when you are cussing your darn Darne...

Darnes have a well earned reputation world wide for frustrating Murphy's law. There are about half the internal parts involved in a Darne, so you may want to retool your thinking. Trips to a gunsmith for regular maintenance are mostly frowned upon by those who build them, and cleaning was described as "optional" in the pre WWII set of directions I have.
Purdey's, don't. Regular trips to the 'smith are understood to be part of the deal. Yes, with proper care, either is going to be a lifetime gun. But, the care part is far more involved, expensive and more often on the sidelock.
You are mistaken if you assume someone who works on pumps earns the kind of living a top doublegun 'smith earns. Or, that gunsmiths of any ilk spend lots of time fixing pumps.
You suggested an English sidelock is more reliable than a pump. You offer no evidence. I beg to differ, and pointed out a test that could prove you were out to lunch on that thinking.
"War" was declared on your gun by someone with a hacksaw. Not me.
I'll get you a Benelli if you want to take the test.
But, I suggest you don't. You will lose.

Quality is not in the eye of the beholder...it just is!
Favorites are just as important tho.
Best of both worlds is a good place to be - nothing is better than a best gun, and nothing is better than a favorite gun.
Start with one, and find another!

Ted this forum is about double guns...not the comparison of the durablity of a cheaply made pump to a fine English gun.
I agree for a boat paddle I'd choose the pump.
I shoot twice weekly most of the time...about 4 boxes or more each time I shoot. In the course of a year that adds up to quite a few rounds through old English guns.
I primarily shoot pre 1900 side locked hammer guns. I do shoot one hammerless side lock (1915).
I haven't needed a Gunsmith as of yet...except to bend a stock.
I still believe there are more Gunsmiths earning a "living" working on cheap pumps, autos and pistols than those that specialize in working on Fine English doubles.
Ps..I have a SBE Bennelli not a cheap pump should I need a boat paddle.
