This is the muzzle of Fox XE 16 made in 1921.

The gun is in excellent original condition with unturned screws, 40% case colors, original blue. The gun is choked 19 and 19. The right choke is 3-3/4" long and the left choke is 2-3/4" long. There is a parallel in each muzzle of about 3/4". The parallel is very well polished and I think it may have come from the factory that way. The barrels are 29-15/16" long. They are actually 29-29/32" long. Minimum wall thickness on one barrel is 0.048", the other is 0.031". There is no keel in the bottom triangle. A friend has a Fox 16 D grade that is also without bottom keel.

Hard to explain but the barrels have a chamfer or bevel that quits at the ribs.

Now I don't know if it is cut or not but I should have the factory information on barrel length in the next day or two.

The first person to post the correct answer is the winner. The prize is a personalized autographed picture of me with my dogs and the gun. By personalized I mean "To my good friend (Insert your name here), AmarilloMike". The winner will need to pay a small handling and postage fee.

Thanks to Joe Wood for the excellent picture.

Here is a link to my Photobucket site with another much larger picture:

Best,

Mike

Edit - The bores are 0.657" and 0.658"
Edit - It has a "Paul Jaeger" recoil pad on it - obviously not original.

They are NOT CUT,...we had this discussion on a thread before and I have inspected several original small bores since and noticed that the bbls are not always touching at the muzzle and most i saw had no bottom keel

So....Mike, I say it's original

At great risk to my reputation as a founding board member of the A.H. Fox Collectors, Inc. I'll vote with not cut.

John and Daryl - I know you are disappointed you saw the post too late to win but at yall's advanced age I would think you were too mature for sour grapes.

Best,

Mike

I would also say not cut. I've seen a couple of 30" 12 gauge barrels that were original and measured small fractions short of exactly 30". I haven't owned that many 16's but there's no reason to believe you wouldn't see one once in a while with a slightly short barrel. Especially in the days of pre-CNC machine shop practices. Silvers

Verbatim alignment with RESEARCHER's response. Your letter from J.C. will state 30" barrels. Cut from what----a 32" XE 16b?? My "guesstimate" on those production numbers, would equal the total number of female fans, of Eliot Spitzer.---TOOL MAN

Mike, there were lots of guys back in the 20s, that loved to change the point of impact by prying the barrels apart, and maybe filing a little bit off of the muzzle. I bet that's what you have. How is the point of impact ?

And, I am deeelighted to not have won the prize.
