Mr. Hands, how long has Bulino engraving been used? Is it a relatively new engraving style?? The Italians love this stuff, and I think we love Italians for loving this stuff. All the best

Hi Barry - I am also one who enjoys seeing the engraver's craft and especially enjoy the photos of work in sequential progress.
Question, may I assume you use some blackening on the scroll to bring it out well for the pictures?
Is this type of Bullino only suitable for a finish like "French Grey"...that is, would bluing obscure the Bullino to a great extent?
Cheers
Stephen

These photos are great. As mentioned before, I also like the sequence format. I see this study in three parts: Technical; application of the bulino engraving Artistic; the cat is beautiful, lifelike and in proportion Style; each engraver has his own style, yours is one I especially like. Thanks.

Thanks for all the kind comments and observant questions. Bulino differs from stippling in that stippling is little dents or craters made with a pointed punch, whereas Bulino is a series of small triangular, diamond, or rhombus shaped cuts made with a chisel. Bulino has a superior effect to stippling by itself, although the two techniques can in some circumstances be combined with favorable results. There is no ink on this work, and french grey, or coin secondly, is generally the best finish for this work. Treblig, bulino has been used for thousands of years in various forms. When performed on ivory, I believe it is the oldest form of artwork extant. The best Bulino is being done today, mostly in Italy, although there are some very good engravers stateside. Bulino can be done with just a single graver, and if the artist has the talent, does not require a great deal of technical expertise, There are very few "tricks" as far as equipment and differing methods. it is in that respect a fairly narrow pusuit. I hope this statement illustrates the tremendous talent shown by todays true masters of this craft.

Barry, fantastic work, thank you for sharing it in such an educational manner.
It should be mentioned that "bulino" is both the Italian name of the tool used and of the engraving technique it is used for. Signor Mario Abbiatico in his book "L'incisione delle Armi Sportive" refers to the bulino as not just a tool but a "magical tool" considering the results that can be obtained with it.

.........see how I go about it. The primary lines are lightly scribed, and I am just starting to put some dots in...... The eyes are one of the first things I locate Proves the old Gaelic proverb, "Tosach maith, leath na h-oibre" (A good start is half the work.")Beautiful craftmanship, thanks for displaying it K.
